Der prächtige Tempel überblickt die Bucht von Bengalen und war ein wichtiges Zentrum während der Herrschaft der Pallavas, als Mahabalipuram der Haupthafen ihres Königreichs war. Der im frühen 8. Jahrhundert von König Raja Simha erbaute Shore Temple ist ein Meilenstein in der architektonischen Landschaft Indiens.
Diese Höhle hat 2 imposante Flachreliefs an den Wänden. Der erste ist Lord Vishnu, der auf den Windungen einer Schlange schläft. Der andere ist mit der Göttin Durga, die mit dem Dämon Mahishasura auf einem Löwen kämpft.
Er wurde im Jahr 640 erbaut und ist Indiens ältester Leuchtturm und einer der ältesten der Welt. Mahabalipuram war seit dem 7. Jahrhundert ein sehr geschäftiger Hafen und daher spielte dieser Leuchtturm eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Sicherheit der Seefahrer.
Dies ist ein imposanter Wagen, der aus einem einzigen Stein gehauen ist. Ursprünglich Lord Shiva gewidmet, hat es jetzt die Gottheit seines Sohnes Lord Ganesh. Er wurde im 7. Jahrhundert von König Mahendravarman I. erbaut. Das andere Highlight dieses Tempels sind die 18 Inschriften in alten Grantha- und Nagari-Schriften des Sanskrit.
Diese Höhle ist ein schönes Beispiel für den spektakulären Architekturstil der Pallavas. Der in den Felsen gehauene Tempel ist der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit der hinduistischen Götter Brahma, Vishnu und Shiva gewidmet. Es gibt auch feine Schnitzereien von Elefanten.
Der nächste Halt ist Krishnas Butterball, ein Granitfelsen, der auf einem steinigen Abhang steht. Dieser seltsame Felsbrocken scheint Newtons Gravitationsgesetzen zu trotzen und hat sich keinen Zentimeter bewegt, obwohl er sich seit mehr als tausend Jahren in dieser prekären Position am Hang befindet.
Als nächstes besuchen wir Arjunas Penace, ein Basrelief-Denkmal, das als eines der prächtigsten antiken Kunstwerke Indiens gilt und lebhafte Szenen aus dem Mahabharata darstellt. Das Relief ist 100 Fuß lang und 45 Fuß hoch! Die Hauptgeschichte, die erzählt wird, ist, wie Arjuna, einer der Pandava-Brüder, strenge Sparmaßnahmen durchführte, um Lord Shivas Waffe zu erhalten.
Panch Rathas oder die 5 Streitwagen ist unser erstes Ziel. Dies sind aus Felsen gehauene Monolithstrukturen, bei denen die Streitwagen den Hauptdarstellern des Mahabharata-Epos gewidmet sind – Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima und Yudhister. Es gibt auch eine Skulptur eines Elefanten neben dem Ratha von Nakul-Sahadeva.
Zuletzt haben wir ein südindisches Mittagessen im Hotel Mamalla Bhavan.

It's not really a day trip, more like a half day trip. It's an hours drive there from Chennai, you then get a two hour tour which is good apart from the awkward visit to a stone carving shop at the end where you are expected to buy over priced pieces. Then an hour back. We were offered a lunch which I guess could have been stretched out to an hour at a push. But really it's a two hour trip plus two hour tour. It seemed very over priced claiming to be 6 hours+. My advise would be to get your own transport there and a guide when you are there and it will probably work our a lot cheaper. We have done lots of tours all over the world including India this was definitely over sold and over priced.
