Um 350 v. Chr. gründeten Griechen von Marseille eine dauerhafte Siedlung und nannten sie Nikaia, nach Nike, der Siegesgöttin.5] Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte hat die Stadt viele Male den Besitzer gewechselt. Seine strategische Lage und sein Hafen trugen wesentlich zu seiner maritimen Stärke bei. Ab 1388 war es eine Herrschaft Savoyens, wurde dann Teil der Französischen Ersten Republik zwischen 1792 und 1815, als es an das Königreich Piemont-Sardinien, den Rechtsvorgänger des Königreichs Italien, bis zu dessen Wiederangliederung durch Frankreich 1860 zurückgegeben wurde
Die Umgebung von Èze wurde erstmals 200 v. Chr. als Gemeinde in der Nähe des Berges Bastide besiedelt. Das früheste Vorkommen des Namens "Èze" findet sich in den Seebüchern von Antonin als Bucht namens St. Laurent von Èze.

Francesco Grimaldi eroberte 1297 den Felsen von Monaco und begann die Grimaldi-Dynastie unter der Oberhoheit der Republik Genua. Die Grimaldis erwarben Menton 1346 und Roquebrune 1355 und vergrößerten damit ihre Besitzungen. 1338 nahmen monegassische Schiffe unter dem Kommando von Carlo Grimaldi zusammen mit denen von Frankreich und Genua am Seefeldzug im Ärmelkanal teil. Plünderer aus dem Sack von Southampton wurden nach Monaco zurückgebracht und trugen bis 1860 zum Wohlstand des Fürstentums bei. 2002 wurde in einem neuen Vertrag zwischen Frankreich und Monaco klargestellt, dass das Fürstentum, wenn es keine Erben gibt, die die Dynastie weiterführen sollen, eine unabhängige Nation bleibt und nicht von Frankreich annektiert wird. Monacos militärische Verteidigung liegt jedoch weiterhin in der Verantwortung Frankreichs.

We just got back from our private tour from Arles to Nice, Eze and Monaco . This was the best tour we have been on our entire trip to France and we have been here for two weeks already! Our day visiting Nice, Eze and Monaco was an absolute delight. Our guide, Djilani was friendly, knowledgeable and gave us local insights to each location. He was very accommodating to our group’s interests and timetable which allowed us to enjoy a leisurely lunch at Chateau Eza. It was a great way to experience the Cote d’ Azur in a day.

Our guide Djilani (or “Joe”) provided with with an amazing full day tour of 3 beautiful cities along the Mediterranean. After picking us up at our hotel in Aix he drove us to Nice highlighting us stories along the way. In Nice we say the Old City and sampled local specialty Socca. Then to Eze and a tour of a perfume factory much enjoyed by my wife and daughters. Finally a tour of Monaco (we saw the Prince drive out) and free time in Monte Carlo. Joe then delivered us back to our hotel. A fantastic day and highly recommend!

Djilani and his air conditioned 💨 car were just what our tour needed. His knowledge of the areas and history are vast. Niece was amazing but the heat, 99F, prevented us from going to Eze. We will just have to come back when it’s cooler 😅 Monaco had tons of cool cars and very expensive stores which we used for their AC. I would highly recommend “Joe”. ps ask him to take you for the amazing Rose wines ❤️🇫🇷🥂
