Sie ist als Nationaldenkmal eingestuft und auch als Kirche Santa Maria Maior bekannt. Sie wurde nach der Rückeroberung der Stadt von den Mauren im Jahr 1147 auf den Fundamenten einer ehemaligen muslimischen Moschee errichtet und weist einen Grundriss auf, der dem der Kathedrale von Coimbra gleicht: drei Schiffe, ein Obergeschoss über den Seitenschiffen, ein vorspringendes Querschiff und einen dreiteiligen Chorraum.
Vom Aussichtspunkt „Miradouro das Portas do Sol“ aus kann man die Kirche São Vicente de Fora und das gesamte typische Viertel Alfama überblicken, das sich über mehrere enge, verwinkelte Gassen bis zum Tejo erstreckt. Es handelt sich um einen balkonartigen Bereich mit herrlichem Blick über die Stadt Lissabon; im östlichen Teil verbindet er sich perfekt mit dem Blick auf den Tejo.
Es war einst eines der bestgehüteten Geheimnisse der Stadt, doch mittlerweile wird es von Reiseleitern und verliebten Paaren entdeckt. Er bietet einen Panoramablick auf Lissabon, der auch von einer kleinen Marienstatue überblickt wird, die dem Aussichtspunkt seinen Namen gibt. Hinter dem Bild befindet sich eine kleine Kapelle aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, die fast immer verschlossen ist. Eine alte Legende besagt, dass schwangeren Frauen, die sich auf den Steinstuhl im Inneren setzten, die Geburt erleichtert wurde. Dies ist einer der höchsten Punkte der Stadt, weshalb man von hier aus mehrere Sehenswürdigkeiten sehen kann, die auf einer Kacheltafel abgebildet sind.
Die Kirche São Vicente de Fora gilt als eines der beeindruckendsten Gebäude Lissabons und ist ein Wahrzeichen für das architektonische Mäzenatentum Philipps I. nach seiner Thronbesteigung.
Das Nationalpantheon, das sich im historischen Viertel Santa Clara befindet, ist in dem Gebäude untergebracht, das ursprünglich als Kirche Santa Engrácia gedacht war, und beherbergt die Grabstätten bedeutender Persönlichkeiten der portugiesischen Geschichte. Das in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts erbaute Gebäude wurde Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts vom Architekten João Antunes vollständig umgebaut; obwohl es nie für den Gottesdienst genutzt wurde, bewahrt es unter seiner modernen Kuppel den majestätischen Raum des Kirchenschiffs, der durch die für die portugiesische Barockarchitektur charakteristische Verzierung aus farbigem Marmor belebt wird. Als Wahrzeichen der Stadt bietet es einen herrlichen Ausblick auf die Altstadt und den Tejo und ist als Nationaldenkmal ausgewiesen. In der Nähe findet wöchentlich, jeweils dienstags und samstags, der traditionelle Flohmarkt statt.

We highly recommend hiring João Coelho as your Tuk Tuk guide. João communicated with us through What’s App and answered questions we had concerning storing our luggage and meeting location. João not only took us to all the places listed on the itinerary but made special stops for us to eat the special Portuguese Pastry and drink Port Wine. Upon special request, he drove us to a location to take a picture of a monument we could not visit and dropped us off at a restaurant location. He thoroughly knew the history of Lisbon and as a native of the city shared his love of the city. We could have never travelled to all the places we did in such a short time on our own and definitely could not have stopped so easily in any other type of vehicle. Our tour gave us an opportunity to enjoy Lisbon in a very short time period.

Our Tuk Tuk ride with Philip (Flip) was very enjoyable. We were able to see most of the highlights of the city, including a great view from a picturesque overlook at the top of the mountain. Philip was very knowledgeable about his city. He spoke several languages. I would highly recommend his tour!

Pedro was an amazing and knowledgeable guide for our 4 hour tour. He started by letting us choose the areas of Lisbon that we wanted to focus on for our tour and he provided lots (but not too much) information and history. Pedro even customized our tour to include a stop at a gluten free bakery so I could try a gluten free version of the pastel de nata. He also guided us to a restaurant that serves a gluten free version of a traditional Portuguese dinner at the end of our tour.
