Von Plovdiv aus fahren wir in Richtung Rhodopen und passieren dabei die hübsche Stadt Assenovgrad. In der Nähe sehen wir die bemerkenswerten Überreste der Festung von König Ivan Assen – einem weisen Herrscher des Zweiten Bulgarischen Königreichs. Dort finden wir eine alte Kirche aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, die mit einigen authentischen ikonografischen Elementen bemalt ist, sowie eine von König Ivan Assen geschnitzte Steininschrift. Als nächstes fahren wir tiefer in die Rhodopen hinein zum malerischen Bachkovo-Kloster. Das Kloster ist das zweitgrößte in Bulgarien, wurde 1083 gegründet und ist einer der heiligsten Orte in der bulgarischen Geschichte. Wir können unterwegs anhalten, wenn Sie möchten. Wenn Sie der Einzige sind, der für diesen Tag gebucht hat, ist die Tour nur für Sie. Bitte beachten Sie, dass die maximale Teilnehmerzahl 6 Personen beträgt.

Im Kloster besuchen wir die Hauptkirche der Jungfrau Maria, die 1604 erbaut wurde und in der eine wertvolle Ikone der Jungfrau Maria aus dem Jahr 1310 aufbewahrt wird. Der Legende nach wirkt diese bemerkenswerte Ikone Wunder. An die Kirche der Jungfrau Maria angeschlossen sehen wir die Erzengelkirche aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Das Refektorium des Klosters ist ein weiteres Juwel des Komplexes, in dem farbenfrohe Wandmalereien aus dem Jahr 1643 erhalten sind. Neben dem Fresko des Jüngsten Gerichts werden wir die Bilder einiger Mönchsheiliger, antiker Philosophen und Schriftsteller wie Sokrates, Aristoteles, Diogenes und vieler anderer sehen. Das Panorama-Wandgemälde an der Außenwand des Refektoriums zeigt eine Vogelperspektive des Klosters mit allen umliegenden Gebäuden zum Zeitpunkt der Malerei – 1846.

It was a nice drive out of Plovdiv to visit an historic monastery and ruins of a fortress. The drive & sightseeing can be done in 2 to 3 hours max.
Great guild and a great time. The views were so beautiful and we had plenty of time to see it all. Definitely recommend!
Great trip - lovely sites, really beautiful. The monastery reminded me of Rila but more intimate. The fortress is steep but if you’re fit you’ll enjoy the church and surroundings. Lovely frescos and icons

Me and my husband spent some wonderful hours of the day visiting Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress. The monastery felt so peaceful and full of history - I could've stayed there for hours. When we arrived at Asen's Fortress we admired the stunning views. Definitely make your way to the top — the stairs only look scary, but they’re really not that bad! Just a short drive om Plovdiv, but it felt like a different world. Our driver made the trip even more fascinating with his stories. It's totally worth it!

Our guide was nice and polite but didn’t explain much about the fortress and church that we visited. We wish we would have learned some of the history of these amazing spots.
