Perge geht als griechische Stadt in Pamphylien in die Geschichte ein; zusammen mit Pamphylien geriet sie nacheinander unter die Herrschaft der Perser, der Athener und erneut der Perser. Nachdem Alexander der Große Phaselis verlassen hatte, besetzte er mit einem Teil seiner Armee Perge. Die Straße zwischen diesen beiden Orten gilt als lang und beschwerlich. Auf Alexanders Herrschaft folgte das Reich der Diadochen unter den Seleukiden, danach die Römer. Perge erlangte Berühmtheit durch die Verehrung der Artemis, deren Tempel auf einem Hügel außerhalb der Stadt stand und zu deren Ehren jährlich Feste gefeiert wurden. Auf den Münzen von Perge sind sowohl die Göttin als auch ihr Tempel abgebildet.
Einige Wissenschaftler bringen den Namen der Stadt mit „Azatiwadaya“ in Verbindung. Die unter diesem Namen bekannte Stadt wurde von Azatiwada von Quwê an seiner Ostgrenze bei Karatepe gegründet.[3] Nach späterer Überlieferung wurde Aspendos bereits früher von Griechen gegründet, die möglicherweise aus Argos stammten. Die große Verbreitung seiner Münzen in der gesamten antiken Welt lässt darauf schließen, dass Aspendos im 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zur bedeutendsten Stadt in Pamphylien geworden war. Thukydides zufolge war der Eurymedon damals bis nach Aspendos schiffbar,[4] und die Stadt erlangte großen Reichtum durch den Handel mit Salz, Öl und Wolle. Aspendos spielte in der Antike als politische Macht keine bedeutende Rolle. Seine politische Geschichte während der Kolonialzeit entsprach den Entwicklungen in der Region Pamphylien. Im Rahmen dieser Entwicklung stand es nach der Kolonialzeit eine Zeit lang unter lykischer Vorherrschaft. Im Jahr 546 v. Chr. geriet es unter persische Herrschaft. Ömer was a very friendly, knowledgeable guide who went out of his way to give us a great experience. Our driver was excellent in navigating his way around the busy roads.
