Das weitläufige Suwon ist ein beliebter Tagesausflug von Seoul aus und die größte Stadt in der Provinz Gyeonggi-do, deren Herz noch immer von zum Weltkulturerbe gehörenden Befestigungsanlagen umgeben ist. Suwon wäre im 18. Jahrhundert beinahe zur Hauptstadt des Landes geworden, als der Herrscher der Joseon-Dynastie, König Jeongjo, 1794–96 die 5,7 km langen Mauern errichtete, bevor er den königlichen Hof nach Süden verlegte. Doch als der König starb, blieb die Macht in Seoul und Suwon bot am Ende eine unglaubliche Touristenattraktion. Die Stadt liegt etwa 30 km südlich von Seoul.

Reiseverlauf
Die zum Weltkulturerbe zählende Festungsmauer, die die ursprüngliche Stadt Suwon umgibt, bringt die meisten Reisenden in die Stadt. Die Festungsmauer schlängelt sich Paldal-san (143 m) hinauf und hinunter und erstreckt sich über eine landschaftlich reizvolle Länge von 5,7 km an vier majestätischen Toren, Kommandoposten, Pavillons, Aussichtstürmen und Feuerzeichenplattformen vorbei. Es wurde von König Jeongjo erbaut und 1796 fertiggestellt. Es wurde aus Erde gebaut und mit großen Steinblöcken und grauen Ziegeln verkleidet, von denen fast alle restauriert wurden.
Dieses 245 Hektar große Erlebnis ist darauf ausgelegt, Sie zurück in die Joseon-Dynastie zu bringen, während Sie durch malerische Gegenden mit strohgedeckten und gefliesten Gebäuden wandern, die aus ganz Korea hierher verlegt wurden. Darsteller, die Hanbok (traditionelle Kleidung) tragen, basteln Töpfe und Papier, während andere sich um Gemüsebeete und Vieh kümmern. Den ganzen Tag über gibt es Shows von traditionellen Musikern, Tänzern, Akrobaten und Seiltänzern, und Sie können eine inszenierte Hochzeitszeremonie verfolgen.

Nate was a great tour guide and host! He provided water and small snacks in his very comfortable and clean car. He grew up in the US, and moved to Korea for college, so had a unique perspective on the country. During the fortress part of the tour, he gave us the history, as well as some facts that really filled out the experience. We saw two of the gates, and walked along the ramparts. We then tried our hands at Korean traditional archery, which was fun! To finish the fortress portion of the tour, we went on a unique bus with semi-opaque LED screens for windows. We drove along the periphery of the fortress walls, and could see images of the building and plans, as well as further history on the screens. When there was something of interest to see, the screens would clear. From there we drove to the Korean Folk Village and started with lunch. Yummy! Then we saw the traditional dances in a parade, and had plenty of time to walk through the whole village, with Nate explaining what we were seeing. He took plenty of pictures for us, and made sure to tell us where to go to get the best views. We finished the tour with a dance performance in the theater, and a drive back to the hotel. It was a really special day!
