Leonidas war ein König des griechischen Stadtstaates Sparta und der 17. der Agiad-Linie, einer Dynastie, die beanspruchte, von dem mythologischen Halbgott Herakles und Cadmus abzustammen. Leonidas war Sohn des Königs Anaxandridas II. 489 v. Chr. folgte er seinem Halbbruder König Kleomenes I. auf den Thron. Leonidas hatte eine bemerkenswerte Beteiligung am Zweiten Persischen Krieg, wo er die verbündeten griechischen Streitkräfte in der Schlacht von Thermopylen (480 v. Chr.) zu einem letzten Stand führte, während er versuchte, den Pass vor der einfallenden persischen Armee zu verteidigen; er starb während der Schlacht und trat als Anführer der 300 Spartaner in den Mythos ein. Während die Griechen diese Schlacht verloren, konnten sie die persischen Invasoren im folgenden Jahr vertreiben.
Neben dem Denkmal von Leonidas, in den historischen Thermopylen, befindet sich das innovative Museum der Gemeinde Lamia, gewidmet der Schlacht um 480 v. Chr., die den Verlauf der griechischen Geschichte veränderte. Das Zentrum für historische Information der Thermopylen, ein wissenschaftliches Projekt der Stiftung der Hellenischen Welt, öffnete 2010 seine Türen für die Öffentlichkeit. Das Gebäude in Form einer antiken Speerspitze, die nach Norden gedreht ist, als ob es den Eindringlingen zugewandt wäre, zeichnet sich durch sein ergonomisches Design aus, das den modernsten museologischen Zwecken entspricht und mit Glasplatten ausgestattet ist, die viel Tageslicht einlassen. Das Zentrum stellt Geschichte als interaktive Erzählung und Diskurs dar: In den drei Ausstellungshallen - Leonidas, Dienekes und Thermopylen genannt - bieten Multimedia-Anwendungen dem Besucher eine virtuelle Reise in die Zeit und Schlachtfelder der Perserkriege, wie der antike Historiker Herodot erzählt, während die Schlacht um Thermopylen in einem digitalen 3D-Film lebendig wird.
Die Schlacht von Thermopylen wurde 480 v. Chr. zwischen den Griechen und den Persern zur gleichen Zeit geführt, als die Seeschlacht von Artemision stattfand. Anfang September führte die persische Armee meine Xerxis zu den Gängen der Thermopylen. Die Griechen haben diesen strategischen Ort gewählt, um dem persischen Angriff zu begegnen. Xerxis hat Leonides, dem Führer der griechischen Armee, befohlen, seine Waffenkammer abzugeben, aber er antwortete: 'Komm und hole sie'. An zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen kämpften die Griechen heldenhaft. Am dritten Tag verrät Efialtes die Griechen und zeigt den Persern den Durchgang, um auf die Rückseite der Griechen zu gelangen. Die persische Armee umzingelt die Griechen. Leonides bleibt zusammen mit 300 Spartanern, 700 Thespieis und 400 Thivaious am Ort der Schlacht, loyal zu seinen Heimatgesetzen. Er fällt tot durch persische Pfeile.
Kamena Vourla ist eine Küstenstadt in der Nähe von Athen. Die üppig grüne Landschaft und die schönen Strände werden Sie verzaubern. Dort finden Sie auch mehrere Restaurants und Cafés.
Die Thermalbäder der Thermopylen befinden sich 15 km von der Stadt Lamia entfernt. Die Gegend ist bekannt durch die Schlacht von Thermopylen zwischen den Griechen und den Persern im Jahr 480 v. Chr. Neben der Straße befindet sich die Statue des Leonidas und der heilige Hügel, wo Leonidas im Kampf mit den 300 Spartanern und 700 Thespiern fiel. Der Mythologie zufolge schuf Hephaestus auf Bitten der Göttin Athene die Quellen, damit Herkules sich waschen und nach seiner Arbeit wieder zu Kräften kommen konnte.

The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.

It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
