Das Denkmal wurde von Kaiser Hadrian (117-138 n. Chr.) Zusammen mit der vorgelagerten Aeliusbrücke als Mausoleum für sich und seine Nachfolger errichtet. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde es der Verteidigungswall der Vatikanstadt, der Standort einer Garnison, eines Gefängnisses, aber auch der Büros der Vatikanischen Schatzkammer und des Vatikanischen Archivs. Heute kann das Innere des Schlosses mit seinen reich bemalten Freskensälen aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert besichtigt werden (Apollonsaal, Paolinasaal mit den Geschichten Alexanders des Großen, Perseussaal mit der Episode des Mythos des griechischen Helden, Room of Amore und Psiche), die Gefängnisse, die Sammlung antiker Waffen, die Gemäldegalerie (mit Werken von Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli und Dosso Dossi), die Sammlung antiker Murmeln, Keramiken und Skulpturen. Die Terrasse bietet einen der besten Panoramablicke auf das historische Zentrum.

We spent a beautiful afternoon discovering particular corners and knowing secrets and compelling stories and a thank you goes to Vincenzo that mel tell her really amazed us.
We took a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese with Vincenzo, a guide who is now one of the strong points of every escape to Rome. This time the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, which apparently is not one of the most attractive monuments in the capital, proved to be the scene of a lesson in history, architecture, life and death, paganism and Christianity. The Farnese palace then was the gem that made the weekend unforgettable. If you visit anything in Rome, the enthusiasm of Vincenzo Spina gives you half the joy.
This was a fabulous tour. Vincent was able to bring the history alive with his great storytelling skills. The Castle was beautiful on its own, but the tour was so worthwhile.
