Reiseverlauf

Great experience

My wife and I have been to MAAHC a number of times this trip we brought 3 family members and thought it would be interesting to engage a guide. We were very pleased with Kenny. He really added insights to our visit.

I have mixed feelings

First, I begin by saying I think Kenny is a very nice person. He has a great situation in DC with African American History tours. In fact, I don't think I saw another company offering it. So he's the number #1 person to go to. He was very kind to me when we spoke. I wanted to have a private tour of the AA museum because I was flying in specifically for that and I only had 2 days coming from a long distance on the red eye. I couldn't really afford his private rate, but he took a few days and got back to me with a alternative that I thought was very nice. Of course I took him up on it. This is not something he does generally, so I felt so grateful to have the opportunity. The tour itself inside the museum was marred by many students, ambient noises and audio tape playing from certain exhibits, so at times it was a strain to hear him, but we forged on. I'm happy I did this because we hit the highlights of the 1st and 2nd floor. I was surprised that the 3rd and 4th floor was not included. Perhaps because of our arrangement I did not get the full experience but I was not told that before I confirmed. So after 2 hrs, he left and I remained on my own. So be sure to find out if you pay for a private tour that all floors are covered before you book. You might otherwise feel disappointed as I did. What was good about it for me is after he left I went back and took my time absorbing everything and that really enhanced my experience and I left feeling satisfied. I did not spend as much time on the 3rd fl, it was dedicated to the military and sports, but I did linger on the 4th fl because it was dedicated to the arts and showbiz. Finally the next day I had planned to visit the Frederick Douglas House on my own but Kenny invited me to join in on his schedule tour that included the Lincoln Memorial and MLK monument. Again, he was very generous in adjusting his fee/time by allowing me to participate as a last minute addition. Here's my sticking point. His style of communicating doesn't leave much room for questions or conversation. He doesn't like it if you interject (and he lets you know it) when there is a pause in the information. There were only 3 of us, so we went in his car and there were a lot of comments about the bad drivers and traffic. I don't recall much in terms of real information being shared, there was some but it was disjointed and seemed haphazard so therefore not memorable. In contrast the docent at the Frederick Douglas House had a professorial style that included a question and answer period after each comment she made. Therefore we received much more information in a well throughout and planned presentation. All in all my short trip was well worth it and I'm glad I went. But I wonder if normally the private tour includes ALL floors at the museum and I didn't get that because of our arrangement? I would be sure to ask that question if you plan on going.

Thank you for your review . You told me you could not afford to pay for a private tour of the museum . Out of kindness I basically gave you a free tour of the museum . I told you about my daily tour you once again told me you could not afford the tour . i took you on the tour for almost for free .you criticism is the harshest I have gotten for the year . Perhaps out of gratitude a phone call to express your feeling would had been much better . I will never be able to please everyone.

Get there before Vance destroys it!

This is a big museum and the tour covers the first three floors. The guide was engaging and fun with personal reflections on the museum from an African American perspective.

Don’t get scammed the museum is free

Anybody getting this tour is getting scammed. The museum is free and self guided. Even with a tour guide $300 is way too much. He’s most likely not a trained docent.

Amazing Tour Guide!

Mr. Burns was our tour guide. He was an amazing tour guide!!! Although the museum was closed due to the unforeseen NATO meeting. Mr. Burns improvised and gave us an extraordinary tour.

Great Tour!

Kenny was such a nice, informative guide! Great experience and well worth the money. He made sure we didn’t miss anything of import. We should have planned to stay a few more hours on our own. Guess we’ll just have to come back!

A very powerful view of the history and culture of African Americans

Kenny was helpful to us to explain the layout and scope of museum. Since one cannot see all of the museum at one visit, he took us on a tour of what is important. We then knew the overview and could absorb it easily and clearly. Retracing parts was then easy and clear.
