Dies ist einer der friedlichsten, aber auch emotionalsten Orte an der Küste Nova Scotias. In der Nacht zum 2. September 1998 reiste Swissair Flug 111 mit 229 Personen an Bord von New York nach Genf – Passagieren und Besatzung aus 16 verschiedenen Ländern. Gegen 22:30 Uhr, etwa 8 Kilometer vor dieser zerklüfteten Küste, stürzte das Flugzeug in den Atlantik, nachdem es Rauch im Cockpit gemeldet hatte. Tragischerweise hat niemand überlebt. Einheimische Fischer und Retter aus den Gemeinden Peggy’s Cove und Blandford waren die ersten, die das Gebiet erreichten. Viele von ihnen riskierten in dieser Nacht bei rauer See ihr Leben, in der Hoffnung zu helfen. Die anschließende Such- und Bergungsaktion war eine der größten in der kanadischen Geschichte. Dieses Denkmal – errichtet von der Regierung Kanadas – wurde entworfen, um das Andenken aller 229 Seelen zu ehren und den Anwohnern zu danken, die während der Genesungsbemühungen Unterstützung und Mitgefühl geleistet haben.
Titanic Grave Side. ( Fairview Lawn Cemetery) Dies ist Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Ruhestätte von 121 Opfern der RMS Titanic. Halifax wurde zentral für die Titanic-Geschichte, weil es der nächstgelegene große Hafen zum Unglücksort war. Als Bergungsschiffe diesen Hafen im April 1912 verließen, brachten sie 209 Leichen zurück. Viele wurden nie identifiziert. Hier fallen die einfachen grauen Granitmarker auf – manche mit Namen, andere nur mit einer Nummer und dem Datum 15. April 1912. Die Gräber sind in einer leichten Kurve angeordnet, die dem Bug eines Schiffes ähneln soll und die Titanic selbst symbolisiert. Eine der berührendsten Geschichten ist die des „Unbekannten Kindes“, dessen Grab Sie gleich vor sich sehen werden. Jahrzehntelang wusste niemand, wer er war. Moderne DNA-Tests identifizierten ihn später als Sidney Leslie Goodwin, eine 19-monatige Engländerin.

The young man that was our tour guide was very nice, but it was very difficult to understand his accent. He is obviously not a local person and knows very little about the area. He did not seem to know his way around or direct us to what we wanted to see or stop at for lunch. We ended up cutting it short and going directly back to where we had started. It was very unfortunate, but I cannot recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful experience visiting Peggy‘s Cove with Neda. She was so knowledgeable about the whole area of Halifax and was very informative throughout our entire drive. She even answered all of our questions when we saw things that grabbed our attention. . When it was time for lunch she had great recommendations and even showed us a nice place that was less busy than the tourist spots. We had a group of 7 adults, and we were very comfortable in the minivan. Everyone in our group was impressed and we would highly recommend this tour.
