Otavalo ist eine der bekanntesten indigenen Messen des Landes. Obwohl der Markt samstags eine größere Aktivität aufweist, ist er jeden Tag mit einer beeindruckenden Auswahl an Kunsthandwerk, Wandteppichen und Webereien geöffnet, die von Ureinwohnern der umliegenden Dörfer hergestellt wurden. In der Zwischenzeit testen Touristen ihre Spanisch- und Verhandlungsfähigkeiten an Ständen, an denen sie farbenfrohe und preiswerte Strickpullover, Hüte, Handschuhe und vieles mehr verkaufen.

Nördlich von Quito zu fahren ist der berühmteste indigene Markt Ecuadors: Otavalo, voller Traditionen und Kunsthandwerk. Auf der Route folgt Cayambe, das bei den Einheimischen sehr bekannt ist für seine Salzkekse namens Bizcocho, die normalerweise mit lokalem Käse und Milchkaramell serviert werden. Wenn Sie dann nach Norden fahren, können Sie einen schönen See vor dem Hintergrund eines majestätischen Imabura-Vulkans bewundern. Schließlich kommen Sie in der Stadt Otavalo an, wo sich der lokale Markt befindet. Wenn Sie den Markt in vollen Zügen sehen möchten, besuchen Sie ihn an einem Samstag oder Mittwoch. Einige typische Gegenstände wie handgefertigte Textil-, Keramik-, Holz-, Silber-, Leder- und Metallprodukte sind zu finden.
Die letzte Station des Tages ist Cotacachi, nur 10 Minuten von Otavalo entfernt, einer Stadt, die für ihre Lederwaren mit wirklich tollen Lederjacken und -taschen bekannt ist. Nachmittags Zeit zurück nach Quito zu fahren.

Our private trip to Otavalo market was amazing. Our guide Javier was super friendly and knowledgeable about everywhere we stopped. I was expecting to just travel to the market and back to Quito but Javier stopped at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking a volcano and at a rose stand on the way. The time at the market was just enough to enjoy (without spending too much money!) and then he took us to a nearby park and waterfall. Lunch is not included but the restaurant he took us to was very reasonably priced and delicious. Our last stop was at a bird rescue where he told us all about the native Ecuadorian condors. Overall we had a great (and tiring day) and enjoyed it all. We would definitely book it again!

This was a great day trip! Our guide was very helpful, kind, and full of interesting information about the area and history. He knew both English and Spanish fluently. This was a pet-friendly excursion. We were in a large van that comfortably accommodated us and our medium sized dog. Both the driver and the guide were flexible, considerate, and interested in ensuring we had the best time! If you can afford the private tour, well worth doing. The market is amazing and a visit to the local weaving factory equally unusual. Good stops.
