A five-star show, fun for the whole family

This is a fast-paced , high-energy musical in the Gilbert & Sullivan style, with a talented cast of five playing dozens of roles amid rapid-fire, split-second-timing costume and scene changes. It’s the true story of a British intelligence coup which successfully deflected the Nazis during World War Two. Sight gags abound, and clever plot and lyric twists keep the story moving. The lead singers are outstanding and fill the theater with high emotions and one haunting love song. The set and lighting are clever, filled with surprises and expertly executed. Lyrics are challenging to follow because the dialog is so rapid, but the story lines are clear. As usual in Broadway’s historic theaters, seats are expensive and very uncomfortable, and restroom facilities are inconvenient. There are a lot of stairs in the Golden Theater. This is a five-star show! Like most historic Broadway theatres, the Golden is beautiful inside, but saddled with the inconveniences of unmodernized venues, including lots of stairs (no elevators for patrons), cramped seating and inconveniently-located restrooms.

Would have been good without the social lecturing

Having five cast members play roles across genders with simply disconcerting and interfered with the audience's ability to understand who was supposed to be who on the stage of any given time. A real shame, since the music and the show itself could have been quite good. This was kind of a sad attempt to mimic what Hamilton achieved with race, and it just didn't work. Watch the movie instead.

It was just cute

Sat in the last row- it was cute and funny but I was expecting more emotional levels due to the storyline- it was mostly slapstick. I think it would be good for a family with kids to learn about history in a funny way.

Fantastic musical based on a true historical event

This Broadway show comes as close to portraying a real WWII event as well as any musical comedy could. The songs were poignant and appropriate. Funny!

Why Is This Show Popular? About As Funny As 70's Sitcom, Weird Tone Shifts, Just Not That Good

Pretty bad. About as funny as a mediocre sitcom with weird swerves in tone and focus. Surely there are better theater options in NY. Would actively discourage you from going.

It’s truly a mandatory “must see”!

This is a wonderful true story of sheer grit by MI5 and their role in deceiving Hitler. That was seen as a turning point in the war. It was WW II and the year 1943. It was a master plan that British spooks devised and they got away with it. The masterminds were the myopic Charles Cholmondeley (played by David Cumming) and Ewan Montagu (acted by Gerianne Perez). They planted a corpse allegedly Royal Marine Major William Martin with a brief case with what we now call fake news of British plans to attack Sardinia. (It really the body of. Welsh drifter called Gwynedd Michael, retrieved from the morgue). The Brits wanted to take over Sicily which was teeming with thousands of Nazi soldiers. The Fuehrer came across the papers and believing the fake papers moved his troops to Sardinia leaving Sicily for the Brits to take over. It’s playing now in The Golden Theatre in Broadway after a run in West End. It’s won The Tony Award and the Olivier Award. The new musical is of course based on the non-fiction book and the movie of the same name. This is funny and fast moving. The props are wonderful and they move them around with great impact. The acting and the music is simply excellent. And the best part is that the actors are newbies who have not dabbled previously in musicals. It’s truly a mandatory “must see”!

Fantastic

This is a brilliant musical. We had so much fun, one of, if not the best musical we’ve seen recently. An absolutely must see!

Mincemeat is more than the use of a cadaver for a spook operation.

Operation Mincemeat was recently imported from London's Westend and initially received mixed reviews until it was tweaked for the American audience. The play is based on a true sequence of events and revolves around supersecret plans for the allies to invade Europe from North Africa bridging through Sicily to the Italian mainland on the toe of the boot South of Naples. The Golden Theater has been transformed into an office located in a bunker below the streets of London where plans are afoot to mask the allies true plans by passing fake information to the Nazis by dropping a recently passed body into the sea off the coast of Spain. The dead body was carry plans pointing to the attack being aimed at Sardinia, located off of Italy halfway up the boot. While the plan was ingenious, there were many problems that could act as a foil relative to bringing it off. There was also a background love story between a gentleman officer and a member of the secretary corps. The stage set was minable and there were only five actors in the play. However, they were able to bring this complicated episode off by playing multiple roles through the use of quick costume changes and hidden passes of props to keep the story moving. This was clever, original, and inventive. What was even more interesting was that three of the cast were women and two male; yet the females were able to bring off male roles with aplomb. Operation Mincemeat is a musical with a leitmotif and was thoroughly enjoyable. I personally didn't mind some of the British "English" references. Also, tweaking changed such terms as "high tea" for a reference to "cocktail hour." My wife, Arlee, really liked it and the evening was fun-filled.

Outstanding! Entertaining, funny, clever. Loved it.

Outstanding! Slick, entertaining, and 100% professional. Good to see British humour landing so well on Broadway. Very funny, and cleverly written. Loved it. Highly recommended.
