Highly recommend this tour, the horses are in well kept conditions and the tour itself is 100% worthwhile. Well done team, thank you for a great experience
A few minutes climbing up the hill from Hollywood takes you to dirt road horse stables near the Hollywood sign. After being assigned horses and briefed about maneuvering and taking pictures, we were on our way along the horse trail in the wilderness. The horses were so gentle, our guide was knowledgeable and so considerate, we enjoyed every minute of it. Opposite of the typical tour, the trip showed us an alternate side of Los Angeles, which I would strongly recommend.
Great 2 hour ride, felt very safe with the guides and got some great photos of the hollywood hills on horseback!
Well-run stable with friendly guides. The trails up in Griffith park had spectacular views.
Amazing experience! The horses are gentle, the guides are super friendly, and the views of LA and the Hollywood Sign are unforgettable. A perfect mix of adventure and relaxation highly recommend!
This trail ride fit perfectly into my Hollywood visit. The Sunset Ranch staff were amazing and very friendly and welcoming. Our trail guide, Megan, was fun to talk to and entertaining, and she took extra care to ensure a safe enjoyable ride. The horses a very tame and well care for. If you are planning to visit Hollywood and want to see spectacular views of the Hollywood sign and downtown LA, I recommend the Sunset Ranch. It’s a fun activity that will not disappoint.
I booked this experience the day before, mainly because I wanted to see how the weather would be during the heat wave. Getting there can be a little tricky, Google Maps doesn’t take you all the way up. The ranch is located past the gate at the top, and you’ll need a reservation to get through. I took an Uber, but the driver wasn’t familiar with the route and ended up driving a bit too close to the horses. To avoid confusion, you can always get dropped off at the gate and walk a few minutes up. I chose the one hour ride, which was perfect for me, I don’t think I could have managed the full two hours physically. The horse you’re paired with may vary, I had Bonnie, a lovely black mare. Some horses are more adventurous than others and might wander a little too close to the cliff edge, which was more excitement than I needed! Our guide, Cass, was fantastic, very knowledgeable, answered all our questions, and gave us a helpful introduction to the horses. She also offered to take photos and videos of us along the ride, which was a nice touch. There’s even a private viewpoint for the Hollywood sign, and on the way back we got a close up look at it, which was an incredible highlight.
Our guides were quick to assess the needs of the individual riders of the group. They knew the personality of each horse and were able to match the riders with the right horses. The trail took us under the freeway, through a tunnel, and past Griffith Park to the hill above the city. The guides stopped for a photo Op at the very top overlooking the city and took the photo using our own phones. Although you are on the back side of the hill with the Hollywood sign and don't get to see it, the overlook is awesome. They only allow a group of 5 per guide to be able to anticipate the riders and horses. The view from the top was fantastic. Some of the horses have been rented out and used in music videos like 'Old Town Road and TV shows like "Yellowstone". Hot day, dusty trail, sweet guides, very cared for lovely horses.
Both my husband & I really enjoyed the experience. On arrival you have to buzz in at the gate to get it, followed by a short drive up the pathway. Car parking is available. You are greeted by a lovely friendly lady who is there to check you in, taking any belongings you have with you. No bags, etc, are allowed to be taken. Free bottles of water are provided. Our group was around 12. My horse was Cowboy. He knew where he was going along the trail at all times, not too much need to direct him. Trail was 2 hours long up the hill & then down again. Amazing views as you ride up the Hollywood's hills. Staff were very friendly & happy to take pictures for you. Very helpful and well trained to look after you & the horse during your ride. Expect a lot of dust to be kicked up during the trail. Defiantly had a few sore patches for a few days afterwards 🤣 very enjoyable experience. Remember to take tip money for after the ride has been completed. Expect to pay around $20 per person. The staff are very hard working.
Based on the overall ratings/reviews I expected a much better experience at Sunset Ranch. Instead my friend and I were met with subpar service. The ride was supposed to be 2 hours but was only maybe an hour and a half. Also the guides and staff were not very attentive despite knowing we were beginners. At the beginning of the ride my horse got spooked and I got thrown off the horse. I was barely asked if I was okay and there was no reassurance given when I got on the new horse which made me anxious for the rest of the time. Keep in mind this trail is on cliffs so getting thrown off could be deadly. Even with that aside I would say the overall experience just wasn't good. The guide said about maybe 2 sentences the entire ride. The view is nice but you could get the same experience doing the Hollywood hike for free. Not worth the price!
