Waste of money!!

We went out at on an 8 o’clock booking during a rain. We saw the same adolescent Manta ray swim by us 4 times at a distance. As the guide moved us further away from the on shore flood lights the water became murky. There were so many boats in the same area that the lights saturated the water. The crew was nice (they are paid to be), but when offering an explanation for the lack of mantas all they would say is, “Well, these are wild animals,” in a rather friendly yet condescending way (exact same scripted line 3 different times. Later on, I learned that the earlier travelers saw no rays. Wild animals still behave in predictable patterns, and if the rays won’t show up during storms, then the company should be up front about the chances of seeing rays (plural) up close. They are experts in the behavior of these animals, but they are happy to make boatloads of money, even if the experience is very lacking. I have dived and snorkeled a lot in many different locations all over the world. This is the biggest rip off I’ve ever experienced. You should go with somebody else at a different, better location. Don’t go early and certainly not during a storm if you can help it. Also, please don’t tip!!! This excursion has a massive profit margin and they are charging a ton for what they provide! Not everybody deserves a tip.

Aloha, We’re sorry your experience did not meet your expectations, but we do need to clarify a few important points. Manta rays are wild animals, and while Keauhou Bay has highly consistent sightings, no operator can guarantee their behavior, visibility, or the number of rays seen on any given night. It is inaccurate to suggest our crew was being dismissive by explaining this. That is not an excuse; it is the reality of any responsible wildlife encounter. Our crew works hard to provide a safe, respectful, and educational experience in real ocean conditions. We also strongly disagree with calling the tour a “rip off.” Our pricing is among the most affordable in the industry, and we have proudly served guests from around the world for 30 years with strong ratings across platforms. Tipping is always optional, but discouraging others from tipping the crew because wildlife did not perform to your expectations is unfair to the people working hard to keep guests safe and informed. Mahalo.

Experience of a lifetime

Experience was amazing. Mantas were so beautiful. Really an experience of a lifetime. There were about four or five of them circling around.

Tour de Manta

The manta ray experience itself was enjoyable, but the tour description should be more transparent about the logistics. It doesn’t mention that you’ll need to drive a considerable distance to the meeting point, where parking is extremely limited. There is no dedicated parking, so you’re left to search for a spot on busy residential streets. We had to park one to two blocks away and walk to the meeting location, which added unnecessary stress before the tour. This is important information that should be clearly stated in the listing so guests can plan ahead and allow extra time.

Aloha Nyree, We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed, but we do want to clarify that the check-in process and two-location meeting instructions are clearly provided before the tour. Our listing states in the “What to Expect” section that the listed start time is the check-in time, not the departure time, and specifically notes that guests should not arrive early. It also explains that this tour has two designated meeting locations: first, guests check in at our store to be fitted with gear, receive a boarding pass, and get directions to the bay; second, guests proceed to the boat for the safety briefing and manta ray experience. In addition, we sent both an email and a text message on June 20, 2026 with the same information, including a video to help guests find us and written instructions identifying both locations. Those instructions explained that guests must first meet at our retail store located at 78-6831 Ali‘i Drive to check in, be screened, and receive equipment. They also explained that guests then drive 1.4 miles to Keauhou Bay to board the boat, with directions provided at check-in. We make every effort to prepare guests by providing these details in the listing, by email, and by text message. It is the guest’s responsibility to review the information provided before arrival so the trip can run safely and on schedule. While we understand that travel logistics can be confusing, the instructions for this tour were sent in advance and clearly outlined multiple times. Mahalo.

Changes

This has changed in the last two years. It was a lot more low key with much fewer boats before. Now, it’s still an amazing experience, but with TONS of other people. We were crowded onto the light platform and I was fighting for space the whole time. It didn’t help that people from other groups were literally screaming every time they saw a manta. It really took away from what could be a serene and peaceful experience. They’re also fitting in shorter tours so they can do more in a night. Like I said, still an amazing time getting close to the mantas, but it was much less than the first time I did this. Kind of a shame.

Aloha Lisel, Mahalo for joining us. We’re sorry to hear that your experience was affected by the growing popularity of manta ray snorkeling and by the actions of guests from another company. While we do not see a reservation in our system showing that you joined us before July 1, 2026, we appreciate you sharing your feedback. We’ve found that about 30 minutes in the water is generally the right amount of time for most guests to enjoy seeing the manta rays, as many begin asking to return to the boat after that point. That said, it sounds like our Private Charter option may be a great fit for you on a future visit, as it allows for more flexibility, the opportunity to move away from the crowds, and a more peaceful, serene experience. Please reach out to us on your next vacation—we’d be happy to help you book a Private Charter.

Must Do!!

Unbelievable experience. Be patient when in the water - the guides will position you to see Manta Rays. We had several Manta Rays do barrel rolls . We had one family member not go in the water and she had a great time on the boat watching and could see the manta rays and dolphins. Dolphin Discoveries was great. Ethan our guide was knowledgeable about the Manta Rays.

Awesome experience!

Aloha, Night snorkeling with the Manta Rays, through Dolphin Discoveries, was the most AMAZING experience ever! From check-in to the boat crew all personnel were kind, caring, and very knowledgeable and informative about equipment fittings and marine life. I would love to give a shout out to the June 22, 2026 7:00 tour boat crew (Jack, Brayden, the captain, ship mate, and other diver. Sorry couldn't remember all crew members names). They all did a wonderful job of explaining exactly what was to be expected while snorkeling, and how to stay calm while the manta rays get up close and personal. Jack and Brayden did an excellent job of explaining the life of manta rays and how to identify each one while we were in the water. A big thank you to Brayden for be encouraging and keeping me calm while in the water. He knew I was a good swimmer, but am very nervous in deep water. Brayden was very good at informing us when a ray was getting close and to just stay still and calm if one were to get too close to our bodies. He did a wonderful job with keeping us safe, informed with marine life, and gave clear directions as to what we needed to do to get in the water, while we were in the water, and with how to get out of the water back onto the boat. Mahalo (Thank you) Dolphin Discoveries Crew for a wonderful night snorkel with the manta rays! I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone that is visiting the island of Hawaii!! It is a once and a life time experience and well worth the money you pay to go on the excursion.

Must See

What an unforgettable experience! Mitch and Bryce were absolutely amazing from start to finish. They were friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and made everyone feel comfortable the entire trip. I’m not the strongest swimmer, so I requested a life jacket, and they accommodated me without any hesitation. They explained everything clearly, made me feel completely safe, and gave me the confidence to enjoy the experience. You don’t have to be an experienced swimmer to do this tour—they do a great job of making everyone feel comfortable. Seeing the manta rays at night was truly breathtaking. We saw so many mantas, and watching them glide so gracefully right beneath us was something I’ll never forget. The entire tour was smooth, well organized, and exceeded every expectation. After the swim, they had snacks and hot cocoa waiting for us, which was the perfect way to end the evening. The ride was so much fun and Bryce will sit and talk with you while Mitch drives the “boat”🤙🏽It’s those thoughtful little touches that made the experience even more special. This was easily a 10/10 experience, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the Big Island. And please make sure to tip your guides! Mitch and Bryce worked incredibly hard to make the night safe, fun, and unforgettable. They truly made the whole experience so special. Mahalo, Mitch and Bryce, for an incredible evening I’ll never forget!
