Our brilliant and engaging guide, Sjoerd, guided us through the final days of Anne Frank in Holland after she and her family were betrayed from hiding in Amsterdam by the Nazis. We learned that they were sent to the Westerbork transit camp where Jews and other enemies of the Nazi Reich were classified and dispatched in freight wagons to the various death camps like Auschwitz. Our tour began with a stop at Anne's first home in Amsterdam, a typical apartment that preceded her family's two years in hiding, followed by the trip to the Westerbork National Memorial Museum. This camp was built by the Nazis to be a calming prelude to the terrible journeys these people faced. We learned that the camp was designed to pacify the prisoners into believing that they were being sent to places for work rather than almost certain murder at their destinations.
