Das „City of Joy Experience“ ist eine Tagestour, bei der die Gäste entdecken, warum Kalkutta tatsächlich die Stadt der Freude ist. Das Erlebnis beginnt am Mausoleum von Job Charnock, dem Gründer des britischen Kalkutta, und umfasst die St. Johns Church, das ikonische Writers Building, das prächtige Gouverneurshaus, Shahid Minar, Indiens ältestes Museum und das legendäre Victoria Memorial. Das Erlebnis endet nach einer malerischen 30-minütigen Bootsfahrt auf dem Ganges. Diese Tour wird von Five Senses Tours organisiert, einer privaten Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, die vom Tourismusministerium anerkannt und Mitglied der indischen Vereinigung der Reiseveranstalter (IATO) ist. 8 Uhr - Abholung vom Hotel Wir beginnen am Mausoleum von Job Charnock, dem Begründer des modernen Kolkata. Im Jahr 1690 kaufte Charnock die Dörfer Sutanuti, Gobindapur und Kalikata von Bengal Subedar Azim Usman und mit der Zeit wurde Kokata zur Hauptstadt der East India Company. Ein Urteil des Obersten Gerichtshofs hat ihn kürzlich als Gründer von Kalkutta diskreditiert, nachdem er Beweise für die Existenz der Stadt in früheren Zeiten betrachtet hatte!
Wir besuchen die St. John's Church, die 1787 vom Architekten James Agg erbaut wurde. Diese majestätische Stein- und Ziegelstruktur wurde 1815 zur wichtigsten Kathedrale von Kalkutta. Ein Highlight seiner Kirche ist das Gemälde „Das letzte Abendmahl“ an den Wänden.
Unser nächstes Ziel ist das legendäre Writers Building, das einen sehr bescheidenen Anfang hatte. Es wurde 1777 erbaut und war für die untere Bürokratie der East India Company gedacht. Heute ist dieses griechisch-römische Meisterwerk der Sitz der Regierungsregierung von Westbengalen. Unser Führer wird Ihnen alle wichtigen Ereignisse erzählen, die in Indiens Freiheitskampf mit dem Schriftstellereigebäude als Hintergrund stattgefunden haben. Wir werden dieses Gebäude von außen sehen.
Das Gouverneurshaus ist ein bemerkenswertes Gebäude, das für Marquess of Wellesley erbaut wurde, der 1798 als Generalgouverneur der East India Company nach Kolkata kam und seine gemieteten Unterkünfte für ungeeignet hielt! Das Gouverneurshaus wurde 1803 von dem berühmten englischen Architekten Charles Wyatt erbaut und ist im neoklassizistischen Stil mit deutlichen barocken Akzenten gehalten. Das Gebäude wurde zur Residenz des Vizekönigs von Indien, nachdem die Krone die indischen Zügel von der East India Company übernommen hatte. Heute dient es als Amt und Wohnsitz des Gouverneurs des Staates Westbengalen. Daher werden wir es von außen sehen.
Das Shaheed Minar wurde 1848 mit einer Mischung aus ägyptischen, syrischen und türkischen Designstilen erbaut. Ursprünglich hieß es das Ochterlony-Denkmal und wurde errichtet, um den Triumph von Generalmajor Sir David Ochterlony gegen die Gurkhas im anglo-nepalesischen Krieg von 1825 zu ehren. Heute erinnert dieses Denkmal an das Opfer indischer Freiheitskämpfer.
Wir besuchen Indiens größtes und ältestes Museum. Das Indian Museum wurde 1814 von der Asiatischen Gesellschaft von Bengalen mit dem dänischen Botaniker Nathaniel Wallich als Gründer-Kurator erbaut. Es verfügt über eine großartige Sammlung von Relikten, Ornamenten, Fossilien, Skeletten, Antiquitäten, Rüstungen und Gemälden aus verschiedenen Epochen.
Nach dem Mittagessen besuchen wir das legendäre Victoria Memorial, das von George Curzon, der 1. Marquess Curzon von Kedleston und dem Vizekönig von Indien erbaut wurde. Dieses architektonische Juwel aus Marmor ist Königin Victoria gewidmet und ist ein großartiger Ort, um die Essenz der viktorianischen Zeit inmitten des Trubels des modernen Kolkata zu erleben.
Wir machen eine Bootsfahrt über den heiligen Fluss Ganges und erkunden in den nächsten 30 Minuten die Stadt der Freude von seinem Wasser aus. Wir passieren die berühmte Howrah-Brücke, bevor dieses großartige Erlebnis von Kalkutta zu Ende geht. 20:00 Uhr – Rückkehr zum Hotel

Experience was very good specially considering we had very less time we were able to cover most places.
The tour was very informative and comfortable. The tour guide made sure we got to know the history of Kolkata very well. We saw all the iconic british era buildings as well as explored the Victoria memorial, Indian Museum and St. Paul's Cathedral
The entire trip and arrangements are good. Could have covered northern calcutta as well. Appreciate the restaurant arranged to taste authentic bengali meal.
Very good recommended tour. Tour guide with lots of interesting information. a private tour is worth it. Hotel pickup was good and at the agreed time. I have travelled a lot with Viator and will continue to do so in the future.
This is an excellent tour visiting many of the major sites in Kolkata. I combined it with 5 Senses Mother Teresa and Churches tour to provide me with a very interesting and enjoyable 2 day introduction to the city. I was very fortunate that my guide for both tours was Prasenjit who is very knowledgeable, friendly and kind. He told wonderful stories about the history of the various locations. Thoroughly recommend this tour.

This visit was part of our third private tour with 5 Senses (first tour, So. India for a month; second No. India for 5.5 weeks; third East and South India, one month). You might have guessed that we are very happy with the company. All three tours were fantastic, this one no exception. Kolkata is a vibrant city and worth a visit. In addition to the normal tourist sites, local guide Dev also helped us find ayurvedic massage studios. Like all major Indian cities, air pollution is a real problem--consider wearing a good mask when outdoors. Bishnupur is an interesting site with terra cotta temples, and is often paired with a visit to Kolkata. It took 3.5 hours to drive there, but 5.5 hours to return because we got back to the outskirts of Kolkata after 19:30, when they let the trucks in and traffic becomes miserable Try to get home before that happens. The Sundarbans--the largest mangrove forest in the world--are a couple of hours outside the city. We spent two nights there. It was a nice break from the urban environment. There is wildlife, but don't count on seeing tigers. The primary strength of 5 Senses is its people. The owner, Mr. Narayanan, is a great travel planning partner (he’ll work with you to craft exactly the trip you want) and he is super-responsive during trips if any problems arise. I am confident that Narayanan will fix it if it needs fixing—he has helped us several times in that way, and he has done it quickly. The state-based “cultural ambassadors” he has recruited (the guides who accompany you for days, across multiple sites) are excellent and soon become friends. For this month-long tour, I’d particularly like to call out Kannan (Tamil Nadu) and Mohan, and Chandra Shekar (Karnataka). If you are touring other parts of the country, we highly recommend Balwinder (Punjab and Rajasthan) and Vivek and Ram Sewak (Varanasi, Khajuraho and environs). It is basically a fool’s errand to try to price shop local tour operators—there are too many variables, including the type of accommodation, the quality of guides and the quality of transport (both of which can’t be assessed ahead of time). That said, over the course of the three tours, we feel that 5 Senses has been very good value for money. And I can say for certain that you would pay three times as much for the same Smithsonian or Nat Geo or other corporate tour, plus you’d be on a bus with many other folks and stuck with the group schedule. With 5 Senses you’re in your own car deciding where and when you want to go, where you want to eat, and when you want to take it easy. My advice to friends looking for a private tour in India is “don’t bother contacting other companies, just talk to 5 Senses. You won’t regret it.”
On arrival warmly welcomed, the guide and the driver first brought me to my hotel to refresh. Then the 4-day Kolkata city tour started. The old cemetery was the first of the series of sights I visited. Personal highlight is Mothers House, every attraction however big remains in the shadow of the simple Mothers House. Have had several guides, all equally enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. In short, visiting Kolkata with a guide is highly recommended.
Had a great guide ( Mr. Parmananda )with historic knowledge of city Kolkata. A senior citizens who knows history in and out @ the back of his mind.
A full day might be long however the city is big and places of interest are plenty. Small walks in between refreshing and boat tour lovely but short. I recommend 45 min. Delicious lunch. Professional and friendly guide.
