Knossos, das Herz der minoischen Zivilisation, liegt 5 km südöstlich von Heraklion, im Tal des Flusses Kairatos. Kretas berühmteste historische Sehenswürdigkeit gilt als die größte archäologische Stätte der Bronzezeit auf der Insel und wird als die älteste Stadt Europas bezeichnet. Knossos wurde erstmals im 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von einer neolithischen Siedlung bewohnt. Es blieb mehrere tausend Jahre lang bewohnt, bis es 1375 v. Chr. Nach seiner Zerstörung, die das Ende der minoischen Zivilisation bedeutete, endgültig aufgegeben wurde. Im Jahr 1878 unternahm der wohlhabende Kunstliebhaber Minos Kalokairinos die erste groß angelegte Ausgrabung, während Kreta noch unter türkischer Besatzung stand. Es folgten die Langzeitgrabungen (1900-1913 und 1922-1930) von Sir Arthur Evans, der die gesamte Umgebung von Knossos freilegte.
Das Archäologische Museum von Heraklion ist eines der größten und meistbesuchten Museen Griechenlands. Es gehört auch zu den bedeutendsten Museen in Europa. Es beherbergt Artefakte aus allen Epochen der kretischen Vorgeschichte und Geschichte. Die Ausstellungen decken einen chronologischen Zeitraum von über 5.500 Jahren von der Jungsteinzeit bis zur Römerzeit ab. Die minoische Sammlung enthält einzigartige Beispiele minoischer Kunst, viele davon wahre Meisterwerke. Das Archäologische Museum befindet sich im Zentrum von Heraklion und wurde zwischen 1937 und 1940 vom Architekten Patroklos Karantinos erbaut. Es wurde an einer Stelle errichtet, die zuvor vom römisch-katholischen Kloster Saint-Francis besetzt war, das 1856 durch ein Erdbeben zerstört wurde. Die Farben und Baumaterialien des Gebäudes ähneln bestimmten minoischen Wandmalereien.
Rethymno liegt an der Nordküste Kretas etwa in der Mitte zwischen den beiden Großstädten Chania (58 km westlich) und Heraklion (79 km östlich). Es ist die einzige Stadt der Insel, die auf einem Kap erbaut wurde. Rethymno hat zwei Seiten, die zwei Besuchsarten bieten: den endlosen großen Strand und die Altstadt mit ihrer Mischung aus Architektur und Geschichte. Die große venezianische Burg „Fortezza“, die die Stadt dominiert, unzählige orthodoxe und katholische Kirchen, Moscheen, der alte Leuchtturm, majestätische Villen venezianischer Architektur, Bögen und gepflasterte Wege, die eine magische Atmosphäre schaffen, haben Tausende von Besuchern dazu inspiriert, innezuhalten und ein Foto zu machen.

We had an amazing private tour to Knossos Palace from Chania, and it was one of the best experiences of our trip to Crete. Christine was a fantastic guide! She is very knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the history of Knossos and Crete. We learned so much and never felt rushed, and she was happy to answer all of our questions. Our driver Thanos was incredibly kind, professional, and made the long drive comfortable and stress-free. We felt well taken care of from the moment we were picked up until we returned to Chania. I highly recommend a tour with Thanos and Christine. We learned so much about Crete culture and history and Minoan civilization. Booked this private bus tour for my family and it was simply amazing. The driver and guide, Thanos and Christine, were very kind, polite and friendly. They took care of us all day and made sure We were comfortable the entire trip. The tour allowed us to see the ruins of Knossos, Museum, town of Rethymno and a local Oil factory. Christine & her team blew this tour out of the park for us! We enjoyed learning all about Chania & Crete. The private tour through Knossos was a huge plus & enjoyable, I’m glad we set up the agenda to go there before the museum because the history was so helpful! We opted to go on an olive oil mill tour and it was so interesting to taste & learn more about the process! Our private tour to Knossos was one of the highlights of our trip. Hiring a private guide was absolutely worth it! They brought the history to life with fascinating stories and insights that we never would have gotten on our own. The experience exceeded all of our expectations, and we left with a much deeper appreciation for the site. We also visited Elafonisi Beach with a different tour company.
