Es wurde um die Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts auf Geheiß von Galla Placidia erbaut, die das Weströmische Reich regierte. Dieses kleine Mausoleum mit lateinischem Kreuz ist äußerlich sehr einfach, während es innen eine reiche Mosaikdekoration hat. Die unzähligen Sterne der Kuppel haben im Laufe der Jahrhunderte die Fantasie und Sensibilität der Besucher sowie herausragender Persönlichkeiten wie des großen Dichters Dante Alighieri berührt, der sich von ihnen für die Abfassung einiger Verse der Göttlichen Komödie inspirieren ließ.
Es ist eines der wichtigsten Denkmäler der frühchristlichen Kunst in Italien. Das Denkmal stammt aus dem sechsten Jahrhundert und ist von klarem östlichen Einfluss. Es hat einen achteckigen Grundriss, der von einer großen Kuppel mit Fresken überragt wird. Wenn man die Basilika betritt, wird der Blick von den hohen Räumen, den beeindruckenden Mosaikverzierungen der Apsis und der außergewöhnlichen Darstellung des Kaiserpaares aus Byzanz, Giustiniano und Teodora mit ihren Paraden erfasst.
eines der ältesten Denkmäler der Stadt, außen aus schlichtem Backstein, aber innen reich an Marmor, Stuck und Mosaiken mit deutlichen hellenistisch-römischen Einflüssen. Die Kuppel, die Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts von Bischof Neone in Auftrag gegeben wurde, dominiert die Szene der Taufe Christi, umgeben von einer sehr raffinierten Prozession der zwölf Apostel, die sich vor einem brillanten Hintergrund aus blauen Mosaiksteinen abhebt. Im Inneren befindet sich noch das Taufbecken aus der Renaissance, das die achteckige Form des Baptisteriumsgrundrisses aufgreift und den Ambo aus dem 5. Jahrhundert bewahrt.

This tour showcased the amazing mosaics beautifully - we had not realised how much there was to see in Ravenna.
DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR! The tour operator cancelled on us 4 days before the tour and did not provide a reason. Very shady. There are much better options available on Viator.
Not really good for English speakers most staff only speak Italian & some not friendly at all but the mosaics are breathe taken and really must be seen the history and education is Awesome 👍

Our guide was very knowledgeable about mosaics and history. She was patient with questions and have us an insight into the Ravenna UNESCO sites. Her English was excellent. I don't think we could have seen so much and learned so much without this. We could walk right into the various sites without delay which was very nice. It is a lot of information, but she covered a lot of ground historically and in terms of visiting multiple locations . There was a glitch with the audio at the end but we continued without issue. I would suggest a stop en route for guests to use a toilet as it is a long tour.

Incredible visit to the mosaics of Ravenna. Elisa is a very good guide, with a lot of knowledge and perfect Spanish. She helped us better understand the incredible heritage the city has and we enjoyed it twice as much.
