Der königliche Palastkomplex wurde 1782 gegründet und besteht nicht nur aus Königs- und Thronsälen, sondern auch aus einer Reihe von Regierungsbüros sowie dem berühmten Tempel des Smaragd-Buddha. Es erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 218.000 Quadratmetern und ist von vier 1900 Meter langen Mauern umgeben. Nachdem König Rama I. 1782 den Thron bestieg, wurde der Palast erbaut. Zuvor befand sich der königliche Palast und das Verwaltungszentrum in Thonburi, am Westufer des Flusses Chao Phraya. Aus verschiedenen Gründen hielt der neue König die ehemalige Hauptstadt für ungeeignet und beschloss, eine neue Hauptstadt auf der anderen Seite des Flusses zu gründen. Auf seinen königlichen Befehl hin wurde ein Palast gebaut, der nicht nur als Residenz, sondern auch als Sitz von Verwaltungsbüros diente. Die königliche Verbindung ist seitdem als der königliche Palast bekannt. Die beiden frühesten Gebäude, die innerhalb des Komplexes errichtet wurden, waren die Dusit Haha Prasat Thronhalle und der Phra Maha Monthian.

I hired a guide who unfortunately didn't speak very good English, I hardly understood the explanation of the place, although she was kind. And the temple was beautiful.

I opted for this service, because wrangling kids out the door is hard enough. We paid about twice what the simple tickets would be. Our driver had trouble finding us even though we were standing outside the address I provided (and confirmed) and he wasn't particularly friendly. The person we were meeting to take is into the palace was late, so the driver had to drive around the block then told us to hurry and get out of the car (because it wasnt a stopping area). The lady who brought us inside rushed us through the front area, took a quick family picture then took off. Previous to this they had suggested we pay for a tour (up selling). Last, after I checked my phone again I see I had received several messages from the tour operator saying the driver couldn't find us and would wait "five more minutes". These were sent up to a half hour after we actually got into the car. Not really a good value for the money we spent.

The driver was very communicative in advance of the visit and turned up before the departure time, was ready and waiting. She provided helpful and useful information about the local area and where to go at the Palace. She gave me the ticket and showed me where to go. Great service, would definitely recommend.
