Die Große Sphinx von Gizeh ist eines der berühmtesten Denkmäler in Ägypten und der Welt. Es ist eine Kalksteinstatue mit dem Körper eines Löwen und dem Kopf eines Mannes, von dem angenommen wird, dass sie Pharao Khafre (Erbauer der zweiten Pyramide in Gizeh) darstellt. Die Sphinx ist etwa 73 Meter lang und 20 Meter hoch und damit die größte monolithische Statue aus der antiken Welt. Er ist direkt nach Osten gerichtet, der aufgehenden Sonne entgegen, und galt als mächtiger Wächter der Hochebene von Gizeh. Die Statue ist mehr als 4.500 Jahre alt (um 2500 v. Chr.). Die fehlende Nase und der fehlende Bart sind berühmte Geheimnisse – die meisten Historiker glauben, dass sie in späteren Perioden zerstört wurden.
