Reiseverlauf

This tour gave us a true insight into the people and culture of Lisboa. Rod, gave us an incredible experience and a wealth of information. We met many great people, tasted delicious food and experienced Lisboa in a unique way.
Unforgettable evening with delicious Portuguese dishes and wines, in a great atmosphere! Thanks to Rodrigo for a wonderful evening!
My family and I were visiting Lisbon and wanted to have a chance to see the area thru the eyes of a native. I booked the tour with Joao and it was fantastic. He is so friendly and helpful and has so much great info to share about his neighborhood and Lisbon in general. He gave us a small tour of Campo de Ouriqu which was great to see. We had an amazing time and I would highly recommend you take one of his tours when you are in Lisbon.
Nice to hear from you again. Thank you very much for the review and we are happy that you enjoyed our food tour and especially in my neighborhood :-) Hope that we meet again next time you come back to Portugal. Until then, all the best, João Dickmann
João gave a wonderful overview of Portuguese cuisine! He made sure we got to try things we had not tried before and learned the seven stable items in the Portuguese menu. He explained where foods came from and how they were grown. He gave the wonderful overview of the city market in his neighborhood, Campo de Orique, and how the Mercado was redeveloped to support the changing community and become a center of local community. We walked around in an untouristed local neighborhood and indoor market trying more food than we could possibly eat and taking home desserts to enjoy later. The whole experience was comfortable and relaxed and did not involve very much walking, which was a bonus for us! He helped us identify wines, not included in the tour but available for purchase at the market to match our foods. Our guide was multilingual (Portuguese, German, Spanish, English, French and more) and knew about many parts of the world. Overall a very enjoyable experience that will leave you feeling very full and curious to try more foods the next time!
Thank you so very much for your review dear Rose! It was a pleasure being with you guys. The challenge of this tour is when we have travellers that have been in Lisbon for a while… they already tried food around Lisbon. But we still manage to give our local foods with a bit of history and knowledge. As we had one of the richest (diverse) gastronomy in Europe, it also makes it easier for us to show it to you. My neighbourhood is also a very “peculiar” one: being in Lisbon, but away from all the tourist attractions. Just us “locals”… :-) And who does not like to eat and drink!? Warmest Regards and hope to have you back soon, Joao Dickmann
Individual, personal tour. Friendly encounters and great insight into Portuguese cooking traditions.
Thank you very much Romana for taking time and writing a review of our Gastronomy experience. We appreciate it. Warmest Regards, Joao Dickmann
My wife and I had a wonderful tour around Joao's neighbourhood on our food tour with him. We have done several tours over the years in groups and at times had a hard time getting the attention of the guide. This was our first private tour so we had Joao's full attention, what a treat. Some of the food tours we have done have turned into more a walking than food tour. This on the other hand was the opposite, a leisurely stroll through the neighbourhood then a sit down at the Mercado where Joao entertained us with the food history of Portugal and the Mercado and plenty of different servings of traditional dishes. We left very full and happy. Thank you Joao.
Thank you so very much for your review dear friends and I´m happy that you enjoyed my neighborhood, market, and obviously our food. Giving you my full attention, is part of the job.. ;-) Warmest Regards, Joao Dickmann
We really enjoyed this tour with John, our guide. He was very knowledgeable about both Portuguese food and history, and was able to tie them together so we better understood how the different types of Portuguese food evolved over time. The tour is very food-centric; most of the time is spent tasting and talking about food, which is exactly what we were looking for. There is some walking from place to place but it is not primarily a walking tour. Overall, highly recommended!
Hi dear Mike! Thank you so much for writing the review of our food-tour that me made! What you mention is correct: Primarily it´s a eating and not a walking tour. For walking you have a lot of other tours available in Lisbon... ;-) So glad that you enjoyed it and hope to have you back in Lisbon in the near future! Warmest Regards and have a great 2020 for you and your family. Joao (John) Dickmann
This was a lovely way to spend late a afternoon and early evening. Campo Ourique is not a district we would have seen and has a wonderful collection of food. Rodrigo was passionate engaging and knowledgeable guide. We went hungry, which is the right plan, and as we moved through the area from aperitif to dessert we learned a great deal about the food and also Portugal itself. From a food perspective it is all good but the highlights for us were the aperitif in the park, the tuna steak, the chocolate cake and a lovely pastel de nata. We chose to get a couple of glasses of wine and were helped with our choices and it was all excellent. We thoroughly recommend this tour.
Thank you for writing a review of your tour with us! Our gastronomy is not very "complicated" but very much diversified. All that is related to Portugal's history and relationship with all the other countries and cultures throughout centuries. It is always interesting placing the food, not just how it´s made, but also why and from where... The best way to know any culture is eating it, drinking it and walking it! ;-) Warmest Regards and hope to see you back soon, João Dickmann
Went on Gastronomy Tour and Sintra Tour with Taking you There. Had a great time on both. Their company tries very hard and is great to work with. Would highly recommend them!
Dear Marie, THANK You very much for taking time to write a review of your experience with us! :-) We "try hard", but with travellers like you, it makes everything much easier.. ! Loved being responsible to organize the bigger part of your holidays in Portugal. It is always a big responsibility for us to give our travellers the best experience possible, as we are the "ambassadors" of our culture and country. It was great and hope to see have again on our side of "the pond"! Warmest Regards, João Dickmann
We certainly loved this tour! We met at a market and went through the neighborhood making several stops. We went back to the market for the tuna we had on the tour two more times during our stay in Lisbon. We have also recreated the tuna back home. It was that good! My husband doesn't really like sweets and he loved both things we had and ate every bite! The food is excellent there and our guide was amazing! If you are into food, you need to do this tour!
Thank you very Mary!!! You are our first who writes a review from our new food tour in Lisbon ! ! ! We are so very happy that we where able to make a nice tour for you. Food tours are always a bit tricky, as you never know the "taste-buds" from our travellers :-) That´s why we created this food tour with a bit "different" but still simple, typical and traditional tastings. No sightseeing around Lisbon, just food in our not much explored Lisbon´s neighborhood. Warmest Regards and thank you! Hope you will be the first of many food lovers we get in the future. João Dickmann
