Wir beginnen an den ehemaligen Standorten der Viertel Five Points und Mulberry Bend, einst berüchtigte Slums in der Geschichte New Yorks. Jacob Riis erweckt mit seinem bahnbrechenden Werk „How the Other Half Lives“ die früheren Gemeinschaften zum Leben, die einst den Standort des heutigen Columbus Park zwischen Chinatown und dem Court District bewohnten.
Der Schwerpunkt der Tour liegt auf den Blocks der Lower East Side und den endlosen Mietshäusern, die von der Mitte des 19. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert in der Lower East Side wie Pilze aus dem Boden schossen. Nicht alle Mietshäuser gehörten zu Slum-Gemeinden, obwohl die Lebensbedingungen hart sein konnten. Wir kommen an der Rückseite des Museums vorbei, wo sie das Leben im Mietshaus nachahmen. Nebengebäude und Wäscheleine helfen, einen in die Vergangenheit zu transportieren.
Die DeLancey Street war früher das Outlet-Center für Bekleidungs-Discounter.
Das Badehaus in der Allen Street diente von 1905 bis 1975 als solches, zusammen mit etwa einem Dutzend in der Gegend. Dieses hielt am längsten und wurde in eine Kirche umgewandelt.
Wir beenden die Tour auf dem Dach des Hotels Indigo. Hier können wir die verschiedenen Mietshaustypen aus der Vogelperspektive betrachten und haben außerdem einen spektakulären Blick auf Midtown – ein perfekter Abschluss der Tour.

Excellent tour by an excellent guide. He was so knowledgeable about everything about the neighborhoods we visited and New York City in general and obviously loves what he does. Exactly what I was hoping for.
The ad talks about Tenement Museum but it has nothing to do with the museum. The meeting place is Foley Square which is more than a mile away from the Tenement Museum. When we arrived at Foley Square there was a union rally going on and nobody to guide this tour. TOTAL SCAM.
I'm sorry about your experience. In the future please read any correspondence you may receive regarding your booking as I always alert customers that this tour is often mistaken for the Tenement Museum. The tour started half an hour before the union meeting, but you were late because you went to the museum. I try very hard to avoid these situations but all I can do is contact people beforehand. Had you contacted me, of course I would have refunded you.

Our tour guide, Rob, is definitely an expert in the area’s history. He came prepared with 2 binders of pictures so we could see the development of the different neighborhoods. We were able to really get a feel for the different cultures and decades of life in this area.

Our guide Rob is extremely knowledgeable about the history and geography of New York. He provided a torrent of information about tenements, of course, but also about the overall development of New York and the immigration to New York of the Irish, Italians, Jews and Germans and the migration of the Blacks from the south. After taking this tour, I see things in New York that I never appreciated or understood before. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in the history of New York or in urban history in general. Note that while the walking pace for this tour is reasonable, you will walk a couple of miles or so.

My wife and I really enjoyed this tour. While the tour is focused on tenements, our guide Rob provided us with a vast amount of information on New York’s immigrants, history and geography. I highly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in urban history in general, or in New York’s history in particular. Note that while the tour’s walking pace is not fast, you will wind up walking a couple of miles or so.
