Ursprünglich "Black Town" genannt, entstand das Gebiet Ende der 1600er Jahre nach der Gründung von Fort St. George. Einheimische ließen sich hier nieder, um mit dem Fort Handel zu treiben und Geschäfte zu tätigen. Ein Teil von Black Town wurde in den 1700er Jahren abgeflacht, um ein offenes Gebiet außerhalb von Fort St. George zu schaffen. Die Bewohner von Blacktown siedelten sich unmittelbar hinter dem offenen Gebiet in New Black Town an. In der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde der Großraum des Madras High Court mit der Freifläche (alte Schwarze Stadt) erbaut. Als König George 1910 Indien besuchte, wurde Blacktown in Georgetown umbenannt. Heute ist Georgetown nach wie vor ein belebter Markt, in dem alles unter der Sonne verkauft wird: Armreifen, Stoffe, Obst, Gemüse, Gewürze, Schreibwaren, Schmuck usw.

NOTHING....the meeting point as stated in the booking confirmation was changed...even a policeman did not know where the location was. The guide took me down 1 part of the market and then told me the rest would not be open...he then took me on a walk through parts of George town...parts of it was scary...at 1 point we went down stairs and under an isolated dingy and flooded bridge. As for the water and snacks that was part of the package...I recieved nothing...what a rip off
