Newgrange ist eines der beeindruckendsten antiken Monumente Irlands und UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Es ist die größte eigens errichtete Grabstätte und Stätte antiker Anbetung in Irland. Mainistir Bhuithe – „Kloster von Buithe“ ist die Klosteranlage aus dem 5. Jahrhundert, die von St. Buithe gegründet wurde. Die Anlage umfasst die Überreste von zwei im 14. Jahrhundert erbauten Kirchen und einen Rundturm aus dem 10. Jahrhundert, ist aber vor allem für seine keltischen Hochkreuze bekannt. Der Rundturm ist etwa 28 Meter hoch und befindet sich in sehr gutem Zustand. Er wurde wahrscheinlich kurz nach 968 erbaut und 1098 bei einem Brand beschädigt. Die drei Hochkreuze stammen aus dem 10. Jahrhundert und sind Teil der Schriftgruppe (mit biblischen Szenen). Das 5,5 Meter hohe Muiredach-Hochkreuz gilt als das schönste Hochkreuz in ganz Irland. Es zeigt biblische Schnitzereien aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament der Bibel. Es ist nach einem Abt, Muiredach mac Domhnaill, benannt, der 923 starb.

We had an outstanding day exploring Newgrange, Monasterboice, Mellifont Abbey, and the Boyne Valley, and our guide, Matt, was a huge part of what made it such a memorable experience. Matt didn't simply drive us from one historic site to another—he connected each location into one continuous story spanning over 5,000 years. His additional stops at places like Mellifont Abbey and his explanations of the High Crosses and Round Towers provided historical context that transformed each stop from "old ruins" into living history. What impressed me most was his storytelling. Rather than reciting dates and facts, he explained how the people of Ireland lived, worshipped, fought, and shaped their country over thousands of years. As an American, it was a wonderful reminder that the United States is still very much a young nation compared to the incredible depth of Irish history. Standing at Newgrange—older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids—and then following the story forward through the medieval monasteries and ultimately to the Battle of the Boyne was fascinating. One of the most valuable parts of the tour was Matt's discussion of the Great Hunger (Great Famine) of 1845–1850. He explained that it was far more complex than simply a "potato famine," providing the historical context, political realities, and human impact in a thoughtful and balanced way. It was one of those moments where history became much more than dates in a textbook. Matt was knowledgeable, personable, answered every question thoughtfully, and clearly has a genuine passion for Irish history. You could tell he enjoys teaching as much as guiding. If you're considering this tour, I highly recommend it—and if you're fortunate enough to have Matt as your guide, you're in for much more than transportation between attractions. You'll spend the day with someone who truly brings Ireland's history to life.

Matt is a master of historical knowledge! I learned so much from him and am glad he was my guide for the tour. We started by visiting Knowth and Newgrange. Then we made quick stop at Old Mellifont Abbey. It is not on the itinerary, but Matt was able to fit it into our schedule and I learned a lot about the place from Matt. We ended up at Monasterboice. I learned so much about the Great Hunger (Famine) and the true events of what happened. We also learned about the High Cross. It was a great tour and I recommend it. It was an excellent learning experience that proved amazing memories.
