Wir beginnen an der Trajanssäule und gehen über die Piazza Venezia, bevor wir die sanft abfallenden Stufen zur Piazza del Campidoglio hinaufsteigen, um die wunderbare Gestaltung des Platzes zu sehen, die alle vom großen Michelangelo entworfen wurde und heute die berühmten Kapitolinischen Museen beherbergt.
Von hier aus gehen wir zum Theater von Marcellus, das oft scherzhaft als das kleine Kolosseum bezeichnet wird. Obwohl das Theater von Marcellus architektonisch dem Kolosseum ähnlich ist, ist es etwas älter und geht auf das Jahr 12 v. Chr. Zurück. Es beherbergte keine Blutsportarten und beherbergt jetzt einige glückliche Bewohner, die in den Wohnungen über dem Theater leben .
Auf unserem Spaziergang sehen wir die vielen Restaurants in der Nachbarschaft und probieren das traditionelle koschere Eis. Dann machen wir einen kurzen Spaziergang zur prächtigen Fontana delle Tartarughe (dem Schildkrötenbrunnen), einem wahren Meisterwerk der späten italienischen Renaissance, wo Sie entdecken, wie sie an nur einem Tag berühmt gebaut wurde.
Das 1555 erbaute ist das älteste jüdische Ghetto. Der Papst widerrief alle den römischen Juden gewährten Rechte und verbot ihnen alle Arten von Handel und die Fähigkeit, Immobilien zu besitzen. Trotzdem blühte die jüdische Gemeinde in der Entwicklung des Handels, einer einzigartigen und wunderbaren Küche innerhalb ihrer Mauern und sogar ihres eigenen italienischen Dialekts auf. Die Große Synagoge, immer noch die drittgrößte in Europa, dient heute als Gebetsort und wichtiger kultureller Bezugspunkt für die gesamte jüdische Gemeinde Roms.
Von hier aus ist es nur ein kurzer Spaziergang zum Porticus Octaviae, einem riesigen Bauwerk, das Kaiser Augustus zu Ehren seiner Schwester Octavia erbaut hat. Vom 15. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert war hier der Fischmarkt in Rom beheimatet. Von hier aus betreten wir das Ghetto.
Die Insel endete auf der Insel Tiber, wo Vergangenheit und Gegenwart nahtlos ineinander übergehen. Sie wurde von den alten Römern als Krankenhaus genutzt. Der Fluss half ihnen als natürliche Barriere, um die Ausbreitung von Krankheiten zu stoppen, und eines der besten Krankenhäuser Roms kann es immer noch sein heute auf dieser Seite gefunden. Die Insel bietet einen wunderschönen Blick auf den Fluss und liegt günstig zwischen dem Ghetto und dem Stadtteil Trastevere. Sie ist gut verbunden, um in alle Teile der Stadt zurückzukehren.

I was very disappointed this tour was canceled with 20 minutes notice. As this was our only day in Rome left we were not able to reschedule.

Our family had a wonderful experience on this tour - we learned a ton but Jamie kept it dynamic, humorous, and didn’t get too bogged down in the weeds. He made great use of our time. It was only us so appreciated the personal experience and ability to ask our questions, and he accommodated the 4 year old in our crew needing to stop a few times. Loved the emphasis on most Romans supporting their Jewish neighbors throughout history. It was heavy at points but also uplifting and he did a great job balancing those themes. Also the gelato was incredible. Highly recommend!
