This isn’t much visited, which is a shame - it’s convenient, the views are good, and the staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful. If you time it right, you can be on top of the Arch to see the Cavalry riding underneath, on their way to the Changing of the Guard - aim to be up top by 1030-1035. There are interesting information boards about the role of the artillery - marred by some glaring typos. Sad that they weren’t checked ahead of installation.
I’ve lived in London for 50 years and never knew you could get to the top here. Such a London hidden gem. It’s like you’re standing above everything and the world is carrying on below.
Wellington Arch is a triumphal arch that was built in the 1820s to commemorate the British victory over the French emperor Napoleon. With its sculpture of the Angel of Peace descending on the Quadriga of War, which is the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, this is a rather impressive monument that comes to a total height of 18 metres, though admittedly that pales in comparison with the 50-metre height of the Arch of Triumph, which I was lucky enough to see in Paris last year. Tens of thousands pass Wellington Arch each day but few people are aware that this structure contains a couple of floors of exhibitions about the arch itself and the Royal Regiment of Artillery, as well as changing displays of contemporary art from the Vigo Gallery. Entry to the arch also gives you a chance to enjoy some great views from the terraces at the top, though at £7.50 per person you might want to consider whether it's worth visiting this site as you're unlikely to spend more than half an hour here. If you're particularly interested in the Napoleonic Wars, Wellington himself, aristocratic houses, or art, I suggest you take the chance to explore Apsley House, the Duke's London townhouse, which is located nearby.
We had no idea that this had an interior and a viewing platform. Really needs advertising! Good views from the top. Definitely worth it as a English Heritage Member
Like some other reviewers, we have driven past on countless occasions but had not realised this was something that had interior space to visit until looking at the website, so we decided to have a look. There are four floors which are probably best visited by using the stairs and then the lift back down. We thought that the art display was irrelevant and unlikely to be of interest to the majority of people visiting the site for its history. The Royal Artillery Museum, although small, was interesting and the rooftop gallery was the main attraction. It really gave you the feel of being in the centre of things but, as others have said, not much use for anyone of short stature unable to see over the parapet! Good close-up view of the bronze chariot that dominates the top of the arch. The arch is also surrounded by many other imposing memorials all of which merit an individual viewing whilst there We did not feel the admission price was unreasonable compared with what one has come to expect in London. What did concern us is the lack of inducement to the many passers by to visit the site. The sole entry board was placed on the opposite side to the main gates where everybody walked through. There was only one other couple in the arch on a very busy day shortly after the VE day processions, which suggests that much more could be done to get people through the doors. Well worth a visit despite many counter-attractions. Not to be missed!
A grand arch and monument to an England hero. Not too far from Buckingham Palace or Hyde Park. Well worth the visit. There are other monuments in the area.
We had an enjoyable time visiting this Arch. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and professional adding to our experience. It felt special to stand on the balconies and look at the surroundings, in both directions. Each floor had a different exhibition; one had art displayed. Another gave information about the building of the arch and its uses over the years. There was also a floor dedicated to one of the war memorials outside that was very interesting. On the ground floor is an English Heritage Shop selling some very nice products. We would highly recommend a visit to this Arch and allow some time to look at the war memorials surrounding the Arch. In total 1 to 3 hours should be sufficient to view and read the interesting posters in the museum.
This is the centrepiece triumphal arch situated at Hyde Park Corner. It was constructed between 1826-30 and was originally dedicated to Britains successes in the Napoleonic Wars. The arch is topped with a bronze sculptural composition of a winged female figure (Peace) and four horse chariot that was the work of sculptor Adrian Jones (1911-12). There are three floors of exhibition rooms and topside balcony access as well for those interested in visiting inside or taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding Royal Parks. Opening hours now seem to be 10-4pm and entry (£5.90 per adult).
I was interested to see inside Wellington Arch and the view which is great but then I was really astonished to find (upstairs) a floor made by artist Henry Krokatsis. It’s several thousand individually cut pieces of scrap wood laid into a wonderful pattern. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen, unexpected and beautiful.
