Could be incredible, but it’s stuck decades in the past

I visited the Intrepid Museum using my Go City card and honestly couldn’t wait to leave. This place could be amazing — the history, the ship itself, the aircraft — but the whole experience feels like a museum frozen in time, and not in a charming way. More like something that hasn’t been updated since it opened in 1982. The layout is confusing and badly thought out. Instead of feeling immersive or educational, it’s just a series of disconnected spaces that don’t flow or tell a story. Everything feels cluttered, dated, and strangely boring for a museum that should be full of energy and excitement. The top deck was very slippery in the rain. Even the signage and displays look tired. To make matters worse, the place felt dirty and worn down, like it hasn’t had a proper revamp in years. With the right investment and imagination, this could be one of New York’s standout attractions — but right now it’s just a missed opportunity. I left disappointed, underwhelmed, and honestly relieved to leave. If you’re using a Go City card, there are far better ways to spend your time.

A fantastic opportunity!!

Fantastic value for money and a wonderful opportunity to look around intrepid!! The military aeroplanes on display have been restored to stunning condition and the chance to visit the submarine was the icing on the cake! Would definitely recommend.

Great history and well-done exhibits.

Great history and a lot to see. plan a few hours. The good: We were all seniors and one of us lives in NYC; therefore, we were able to get significant admission discounts. The museum is on and in the Intrepid. The presentations inside give a great history of the ship and its functions, as well as its contributions to history. As an aircraft carrier, it also doubles as an air museum with displays of many aircraft including a space shuttle. There is a snack bar below decks with basic fare. there are a couple of gift shops if you are so inclined. The not so good: It can be crowed at times especially is some places like the climb to the bridge. Take your time, go with the flow. Worth the trip is you are in Manhattan, particularly if you like the history.

WOW!

We visited on memorial day and attended the ceremony to honour the fallen. It was very moving and educational with great speakers including the NYC Mayor. The scale of the ship is unbelievable with the bonus of a Space Shuttle, Concorde and Submarine on site to compliment the many aircraft and exhibits, with detailed narrative / signage. So many opportunities for great photos. I should also say that the staff on site were very approachable and helpful. Enjoy!

It was interesting. The...

It was interesting. The experience could be as short (just walk through) or as long (if you stop & read every plaque) as you want. We got to get pictures sitting in a MASH helicopter or sitting on a military barber chair. My husband enjoyed the submarine the most especially talking to the retired veterans inside who were able to answer questions about the sub. I felt very small on the deck of the Intrepid but very tall when going through the bulk heads in the sub.

Very beautiful discovery

The collections are superb and extremely varied: planes, ships, submarines... you really see everything, which makes the visit fascinating from start to finish. The highlight remains clearly the visit to the submarine with a passionate narrator, very interesting and always ready to answer all questions. The explanations in the museum are also very well done and allow for a better understanding of the history of the different displayed pieces. An immersive and very comprehensive visit, even for those who are not necessarily passionate about the military or naval world to begin with.

Must See Museum in NYC

This experience was so cool! Went through the submarine tour, explored the aircraft carrier, saw the space shuttle Enterprise, and spent a few hours just taking everything in. Walking through the submarine was probably one of the craziest parts of the experience because it really puts into perspective how people lived and worked in such tight spaces for long periods of time. It also really makes you appreciate those service folks to are willing to sacrifice for us. Def a must see if you’re visiting NYC.
