Beautiful Volcano, But an Underwhelming Experience ⭐⭐⭐

I can’t say I was the biggest fan of this tour overall. We were told to be ready at 6:00 AM, with pickup expected around 6:05. They arrived shortly after, around 6:10, which wasn’t a big issue. Our group included three other parties, so six additional people in total. The drive to the hike itself wasn’t bad. Most of us ended up sleeping on the way. We made a stop at a gas station for breakfast. The food was mediocre and priced individually. They had chicken tamales, cheese tamales, eggs, turkey and beef sausage, beans, and plantains. I had everything except the beans and turkey sausage, which came out to about $6.50. I ended up giving the eggs and sausage to a stray dog. It was convenient to grab something for the road, but the day before we had stopped at a really cute local coffee shop, so my expectations were a bit higher in comparison. From the gas station to the hike, the drive was short. The hike itself was moderate. It started off fairly intense for the first 15 minutes then leveled out with some rocky sections and light climbing. Nothing too strenuous overall. We made about three stops for people to catch their breath and take photos. Due to sulfur gas near the top, we were only allowed about 10 minutes there, and you could actually start tasting it in your mouth shortly before reaching the summit. The view at the top was beautiful, and there was even someone selling ice cream for $2, which looked very refreshing. The descent was much easier and took about an hour total. The guide texted us the menu while on the hike, but most of us couldn’t access it due to poor reception. That information really should have been sent when the tour was booked or at least the day before. Afterward, we headed to the lake, which was about a 45-minute drive. This stop felt unnecessary and underwhelming. The food was okay, but it was very touristy and overpriced. There wasn’t really a place to sit and enjoy the lake. You could walk to the edge and dip your feet in, but that area was also where jet skis were constantly coming in and out. Four people in our group chose to do jet skis, which added an extra 20–25 minute wait while the rest of us just sat around ready to leave and wanting to avoid traffic. I would have preferred skipping this stop and heading back earlier. I was also a bit confused about the drop-off order on the way back. We were the last to be picked up before the hike but the last dropped off as well. The guide mentioned it was more efficient based on routing from the opposite direction, but when I mapped it out, it seemed like it may have added about 30 minutes to the overall commute. The van itself was comfortable with strong AC, but the long drive and traffic made it hard on my back by the end of the day. Our guide was genuinely very kind and friendly, and he did a great job sharing the history of El Salvador at the beginning of the tour. That said, I would recommend improving the breakfast stop options and reconsidering the lake stop altogether. For future travelers, I’d personally skip it. It didn’t add much value. Overall, between the long time in the van, limited time at the volcano summit, and the extra stop, the tour felt underwhelming for the cost and time involved. This is a tour I personally wouldn’t book again.

It was hard, but it was worth it

This was one of the hardest things I've done in a long time. And I did it to remind myself that I can still do hard things. And I DID IT, and I'm glad I did! On a difficulty scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most difficult, I rate it a 6. But I could not have done this without trekking poles. I'm also glad I was wearing proper hiking boots because my ankles really took a beating on the climb down. Victor was my guide, and he was great. I was the slowest person in the group that completed the hike, and he never left me behind. He was patient when I needed breaks and didn't try to rush me up or down the hill. I also enjoyed lunch at Lake Coatepeque. The meal and the view were wonderful.

Honeymoon Trip

My husband and I went on this volcano hiking tour during our honeymoon and it was one of the best experiences of the trip. Our guide Gaby was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable, friendly, and made the climb really enjoyable with great stories and constant encouragement. The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking. Also, the paleta men at the very top make the view even sweeter! My knees are pretty sore now after the descent, but I know they’ll recover soon. It was definitely worth it. We highly recommend this tour! 🌋❤️

Amazing trip and guide - well worth every penny

The pick up was on time communication was great after booking and during the entire time. Diego was our guide he was amazing very welcoming and he definitely enjoys his job. He’s very easy to talk to and ask questions and gave a lot of information to the group. He’s mindful of everyone’s physical accommodation the entire time. Definitely enjoyed the group tour. Very comfortable coaster bus. Definitely will book with the company again. Thank you very much for such a great day!

I wish there was an...

I wish there was an option to select my fitness level when booking because I got paired with an advanced group and felt left behind the entire time. Unfortunately because of this pace I was unable to complete the hike with the group.

The land of the volcanoes 🌋

A must tour when in el Salvador. Our tour guide Gabi was great. I booked very last minute (the night before) and was able to go. Try the fresh tilapia for lunch! Delish!

Well worth it

This was an excellent excursion. Josué, our guide, did a great job of explaining what was to come, and he gave us a good amount of history as well. The waterfalls were picturesque and are a must if you visit El Salvador. Be prepared for an intermediate hike to get to and from the waterfalls. The beach, beach town, and beach food were top notch. Our driver, also named Josué, was accommodating and careful. I'd definitely use this company for another excursion.

This review comes so late...

This review comes so late but my son and I had the best hiking experience here! At 6 years old, my kiddo managed to climb all the way to the top and the guide kept a great pace and a watchful eye over all of us. Even when my son got a little too happy on his hike down and had a minor stumble in the rocks, our guide showed great care and concern. He was so personable and got everyone in the group to know a little bit about one another, so I was very impressed!

Stunning Volcano Hike, but the Guiding Experience Fell Short

I was very excited for this tour because Santa Ana Volcano and Lake Coatepeque were two of the places I was most looking forward to visiting in El Salvador. When I first met our guide, Josue, I was optimistic. He seemed very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed learning about El Salvador's history, culture, and current developments throughout the day. The hike itself was wonderful. Santa Ana Volcano is not an easy hike—it is steep and requires a good level of fitness—but the reward at the top is absolutely worth it. The crater is stunning, and there are beautiful viewpoints along the trail. At the summit, vendors even sell frozen treats, which are very welcome after the climb. Unfortunately, my experience with the guiding aspect of the tour was disappointing. We were a small group consisting of three solo travelers and an American couple. At the beginning of the hike, Josue told us it would take a maximum of two hours to reach the top. The three of us who were at the back of the group completed the ascent in approximately 86 minutes, which I believe is a very reasonable pace for a challenging hike. However, one of the other solo travelers later shared that Josue had complained that we were slower than another group from a previous day. I found that unprofessional and discouraging. Every group is different, and guides should focus on supporting their current guests rather than comparing them to others. What disappointed me most was the lack of engagement and attentiveness during the hike. There were numerous scenic viewpoints along the trail that many of us would have appreciated learning about or stopping at briefly. Hiking is not only about reaching the destination; it is also about enjoying the journey and the scenery along the way. Instead of pointing out viewpoints, explaining features of the landscape, or suggesting photo opportunities, Josue spent much of both the ascent and descent on his phone. At one point during the climb, we passed a lookout tower with stairs leading to an excellent viewpoint. We were told we would visit it on the way down to avoid crowds. However, when we returned, there was no effort made to remind the group or encourage those interested to stop and enjoy the view. Only a few of us ended up visiting it, and many others likely missed the opportunity entirely. My biggest concern was safety and group awareness. During the descent, one of the women in our group fell. What surprised me was that Josue did not appear to be aware that it had happened. A guide's role is not only to provide information but also to monitor the well-being of participants, especially on a steep and challenging trail. I would have expected more attention to the group throughout the hike. After the volcano, we visited Lake Coatepeque. The lunch was good, and the lake is beautiful. However, I think the tour description could be more realistic about what visitors can actually do there. While activities such as swimming, boat rides, or jet skiing may be mentioned, there was not enough time in our schedule to realistically participate in those activities. In our case, none of us even considered swimming, and the stop felt more like an opportunity to enjoy lunch and the lake views than to experience the water itself. Overall, Santa Ana Volcano was one of the most beautiful hikes I experienced in El Salvador, and I am glad I did it. The scenery, the crater, and the natural beauty of the area were exceptional. However, I believe the quality of a tour depends heavily on the guide, and in this case, the experience did not meet my expectations. Josue was knowledgeable about the country, but I would have appreciated a guide who was more engaged with the group, more attentive to safety, more focused on highlighting the scenery, and more supportive of hikers moving at different paces. I still recommend visiting Santa Ana Volcano because it is truly spectacular. However, if I were to do this hike again, I would likely choose a different tour company or guide.

Fantastic Day with Diego!

Diego Gomez was our guide and he is an absolute gem! Very kind, patient, knowledgeable, professional and fun to be with! My sister and I really enjoyed this tour, even if a bit challenging towards the end of the hike. The view on top is stunning and totally worth it ...surprisingly the pictures shown for the tour are exactly what you see! Had a great lunch on the lake too! I highly recommend this tour, especially if you can go with the tour master Diego! :)
