Challenge the Mind

This hike is **not for the weak!** It's tough—but the views along the way and at the summit are absolutely breathtaking and jaw-dropping all at once. A good friend and I decided to visit El Salvador, and hiking Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) was at the top of our bucket list. We had seen videos on TikTok of the incredible emerald-green crater lake, and honestly... the famous ice cream sold at the top was just the cherry on top. I purposely didn't research the hike any further because I wanted to be surprised. I didn't want to psych myself out beforehand. We had to be ready and at our pickup spot by **5:20 a.m.** Our tour guide, **Mr. Josue Romero**, was wonderful. He was hilarious, which definitely helped lighten the mood during such an early pickup. He was also incredibly organized and well-prepared. Before we even left, he messaged us the menu for the restaurant we'd be visiting after the hike so he could place our orders in advance. By the time we finished hiking, our food was already being prepared—a small detail that made a huge difference. During the drive, Josue didn't just brief us about the volcano. He also shared the history of El Salvador, talked about the country's present day, and was open to answering questions from the group. It made the bus ride fly by. Once we arrived... let me warn you: the first 10 minutes from the parking lot are enough to make you question every life decision that led you there. 😂 My friend was seriously close to turning around. But she kept pushing, and so did everyone else in our group. Just like Josue promised, your body eventually adjusts to the climb. We had plenty of rest stops, and everyone was encouraged to hike at their own pace. The group always waited until the last person caught up before continuing, which made the experience feel supportive instead of rushed. The trail itself is very rocky, steep, and includes several sections of man-made stairs. If your ankles tend to roll easily, definitely wear supportive hiking shoes and watch your footing. Once we reached the summit, we were told we had about **10 minutes** for photos because of the sulfur exposure safety guidelines. But those 10 minutes were unforgettable. The emerald-green crater lake, the surrounding mountains, and the endless horizon completely took my breath away. Standing there, all I could think was, **"We actually hiked this."** If you're looking for a challenge, do it. The sense of accomplishment after hiking up—and back down—Ilamatepec is worth every sore muscle. You definitely earn bragging rights. After the hike, we headed to Lake Coatepeque, the second part of our tour. We ate at a beautiful lakeside restaurant selected by our guide. The food was delicious, and the views of the caldera lake were absolutely stunning. At the end of the day, we were dropped back off at our individual pickup locations. I would absolutely recommend this experience. Even if you don't consider yourself a hiker, I still think you can do it. It just takes determination, a strong mindset, and the willingness to keep putting one foot in front of the other. And if you happen to have some bottled-up stress or frustration... this hike is a pretty great place to leave it all on the mountain.

Spectacular, chill hike

Great guide, fabulous hike ! Left very early but had the advantage of beating the crowd and getting up there before the clouds cover the lagoon. Guide was great, patient - quite an easy hike but still spectacular view. Only improvement suggestion - the pick up time was not super well communicated vs the advertisement (apparently you have to read the small letter conditions)

Best volcano hike!

It was a great experience! The hike wasn’t that bad and the view was spectacular. Our guide Josue was really knowledgable and shared a lot about El Salvador. The pick up was on time, comfortable transport and the Coatepeque Lake stop for lunch was a bonus. Talking about a lunch with a view, it was perfect. And the food was 10/10. It’s a must activity when you visit El Salvador!

Excellent visit to the volcano santa ana with Joshua

It was a very good walk with Joshua to the peak of the volcano santa ana. He went through in-depth details about the country, volcanoes, economy, etc. making the journey full of content. During the climb he was always very attentive to everyone and closely monitoring so that the group did not disperse. Recommendation to everyone!
