Nach der Ankunft in Guimarães beginnen wir unsere Tour im oberen Teil der Stadt, wo sich die Burg Guimarães befindet. Unser Reiseführer erzählt Ihnen etwas über die frühe Geschichte Portugals, während Sie an der ältesten mittelalterlichen Burg Portugals vorbeikommen und den Abstieg in die Innenstadt beginnen.
Diese Kirche stammt aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und ist derzeit als Nationaldenkmal eingestuft. Es handelt sich um ein im romanischen Stil erbautes Gebäude, das zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts entsprechend seinem ursprünglichen Aussehen umgebaut wurde. Mit dieser Kirche ist eine Legende verbunden, der zufolge der erste König Portugals, D. Afonso Henriques, hier getauft wurde.
Dieser Palast stammt aus dem frühen 15. Jahrhundert und sein Bau wurde von D. Afonso (Sohn von König D. João I.) zum Zeitpunkt seiner Heirat mit D. Constança de Noronha angeordnet. Im Laufe der Jahre diente es mehreren Zwecken und verursachte Verschleiß. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts begann die Restaurierung des Schlosses. Es ist als Nationaldenkmal eingestuft und dient derzeit als Museum, in dem Wandteppiche, Möbel, chinesisches Porzellan und Gemälde ausgestellt sind.
Beim Abstieg in das Wohngebiet der Stadt passieren wir die Rua de Santa Maria, eine der ersten Straßen in Guimarães, die als Hauptverbindung zwischen dem Kloster von D. Mumadona Dias, dem Wohngebiet und dem diente Schloss.
Dies ist ein sozialer Platz für die Einwohner von Guimarães, wo Sie Restaurants, Bars und Terrassen finden, umgeben von der typischen Architektur der Stadt. Der Legende nach geht der Name des Platzes auf den Apostel Jakobus zurück, der auf einer Pilgerreise hier ein Bild der Jungfrau Maria hinterließ. Im 12. Jahrhundert wurde dort eine Kirche erbaut, die im 19. Jahrhundert abgerissen wurde.
Largo da Oliveira ist einer der symbolträchtigsten und geschichtsträchtigsten Plätze in Guimarães, Portugal. Sein Name stammt von einem alten Olivenbaum, der Frieden und Tradition symbolisiert. Dieser Ort war im Laufe der Jahrhunderte Schauplatz bedeutender Ereignisse, darunter mittelalterliche Gerichtshöfe und entscheidende Momente bei der Entstehung Portugals als Nation.
Neben der Kirche ist Largo da Oliveira für das Padrão do Salado bekannt, ein Denkmal, das den Sieg von D. Afonso IV. über die Mauren in der Schlacht von Salado im Jahr 1340 feiert.
Vom Largo da Oliveira aus können Sie die Kirche Nossa Senhora da Oliveira – Colegiada de Guimarães sehen, deren Ursprünge auf ein Kloster zurückgehen, das in der ersten Hälfte des 10. Jahrhunderts von Gräfin Mumadona Dias gegründet wurde. Die heutige Kirche wurde 1387 im Auftrag von König D. João I. nach Vorbildern gotischer Architektur erbaut.

Jahrhunderts zurück, nachdem sie 10891 von Bischof D. Pedro als heilig und der Jungfrau Maria geweiht wurde. Die Kathedrale von Braga gilt als die erste portugiesische Kathedrale, die mehrere Jahrzehnte vor der Gründung der Nation selbst erbaut wurde.
Das Heiligtum Bom Jesus do Monte ist ein Juwel der religiösen Architektur und Landschaftsgestaltung in Braga. Mit einer über 600-jährigen Geschichte ist dieser christliche Wallfahrtsort ein bemerkenswertes Beispiel für die europäischen Sacri Monti, die nach dem Konzil von Trient im 16. Jahrhundert gegründet wurden. Die Via Crucis des Heiligtums, die sich den Berghang hinaufschlängelt, besteht aus Kapellen, Brunnen und Skulpturen, die die Passion Christi darstellen, und gipfelt in der neoklassizistischen Kirche, die zwischen 1784 und 1811 erbaut wurde. Die Treppe der fünf Sinne, ein barockes Werk, ist ein eines der symbolträchtigsten Elemente des Ensembles und symbolisiert die menschlichen Sinne durch Brunnen und Statuen. Bom Jesus do Monte wurde 2019 von der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe anerkannt und zeichnet sich durch seine harmonische Integration in die Naturlandschaft sowie seine kulturelle und spirituelle Bedeutung aus. Das Heiligtum bietet einen Panoramablick auf Braga und ist ein Beweis für die religiöse Tradition und den Einfluss der katholischen Kirche in der Region.

The stop and sites were beautiful. Rick was a wonderful guide and explained the history of each stop. Small group was perfect. I don’t think it would be as enjoyable tour if it was a large group.

Our guide was Diana; although we had booked the tour in English, since we were all Spanish speakers, she made the effort to do it in Spanish. Everything she told us was very interesting, the history, the legends/traditions 😜 Very kind, she drove the van herself, and by the way, she drives very well, very carefully; she would drop us off at one point to take a tour and pick us up at another point, so we didn't have to walk back. The tour is 100% recommended and Diana is a fantastic guide. Thank you Diana

I sign up for English Braga and Guimares Medieval Tour. We got mix with a Portuguese couple not by choice which became a big problem. Diana our tour guide because they speak same Portuguese language our tour became a disaster. She spends most time with them, elaborate more on Portuguese than English.Diana became and serve as their private tour guide than the group tour guide. I was very disappointed with this tour. This tour should have been worth it but became not our moneys worth. It's a waste of our time

Ivo was a very personable and knowledgeable tour guide. Our tour occurred when the area was experiencing an extreme heat wave and we were traveling with an elderly family member. Ivo was able to adapt our tour to ensure my Mom got an excellent experience despite not being able to walk for long periods of time in the extreme heat. The tour itself was fantastic, with many sites being firsts for us and Ivo explained the history of the sites while also providing insight into the local culture. Great experience.
