Die Basilika Santa Maria degli Angeli liegt 4 km von Assisi entfernt. Im Inneren der Basilika befindet sich die Porziuncola-Kapelle; der Ort, den der Heilige Franziskus am meisten liebte und wo Gott ihm besondere Gnaden gewährte. Ursprünglich war die Porziuncola eine alte Kapelle, umgeben von einem kleinen Waldstück (daher vielleicht der Name), das den Benediktinern des Klosters S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio gehörte. Nachdem sie lange Zeit verlassen war, wurde sie von Francesco restauriert, der sie von Abt Teobaldo mietete. Nach dem Tod des Heiligen entstanden einige feste Gebäude rund um die Kirche: der Chor der Mönche, verschiedene kleine Oratorien und dann ein kleines Kloster. In der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts ordnete Pius V. den Bau einer großen Basilika an, die die Porziuncola umschließen und schützen und die Scharen von Pilgern aufnehmen sollte, die ständig dorthin strömten.
Die Basilika Santa Chiara ist ein religiöses Gebäude im neoromanischen Stil in Assisi. Die Basilika zählt zu den berühmtesten Italiens und zu den schönsten Umbriens. Die Kirche markiert nicht nur das historische Zentrum der Stadt, sondern ist auch aus künstlerischer und kultureller Sicht ein bedeutender Ort. Die Basilika Santa Chiara wurde von den Benediktinermönchen erbaut, die den Wunsch verspürten, Santa Chiara zu ehren, die 1194 als Agnese geboren wurde und am 13. September 1253 starb. Derzeit zusammen mit der Porziuncola, dem Eremo delle Carceri, der Chiesa Nuova und der Basilika San Damiano, die Kathedrale San Rufino und natürlich die Basilika San Francesco sind eines der Zentren, in denen sich die Pilgerfahrt nach Assisi konzentriert.
Prächtige Barockresidenz mit Freskengewölben aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert von umbrischen und toskanischen Malern. Befindet sich in der Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi, in deren Inneren eine bemerkenswerte Gruppe von Fresken aus dem Mittelalter und der Renaissance zu sehen ist.
Die Basilika San Francesco d'Assisi, der Ort, an dem seit 1230 die sterblichen Überreste des seraphischen Heiligen aufbewahrt werden, ist eine der wichtigsten Kultstätten in Italien und der Welt. Im Jahr 2000 wurde die Basilika in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. Der Grundstein für die Basilika des Heiligen Franziskus von Assisi wurde am 16. Juli 1228 gelegt, nur zwei Tage nach Franziskus‘ Tod und einen Tag nach seiner Heiligsprechung durch Papst Gregor IX. Der Überlieferung zufolge war es Franziskus selbst, der genau den Ort angab, an dem er begraben werden wollte. Die Kirche stellt einen der Eckpfeiler der Ausbreitung der Gotik in Italien dar. Abgesehen davon, dass es sich um die Grabstätte des Heiligen Franziskus handelte, erlangte es eine grundlegende Bedeutung für das Papsttum, das den Franziskanerorden als großen Verbündeten für die Stärkung der Beziehungen zu den bescheidensten und populärsten Klassen betrachtete. Der Bau der Basilika wurde 1228 von Papst Gregor IX. begonnen und 1253 von Papst Innozenz IV. geweiht.

Excellent! Tour assistant and driver were both very pleasant. On time departure. Beautiful drive. Tour guide Marco in Assisi was very thorough and excellent topic knowledge. Tour went long because he seemed to really enjoy what he does. Tour assistant pointed things out on the way, but also didn’t just talk at us the whole time. I cannot recommend the group at Welcome Italy enough for their day excursions. Cars are very clean and comfortable. We had paid for a small group tour but it ended up being only us which made the tour even more personal.

Welcome Italy was such a great way for my wife and I to experience a full trip in Rome. We actually had three separate excursions with them. First we went to Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. After a full three days in Rome, this was such a quiet and relaxing day. Antoinetta was so personable and made us feel at home, and our driver Pietro was great. The second day we traveled with Marie and Pino to Orvieto and Assisi. Again, both were professional and it felt like we were traveling with old friends by the end of the day. Our third day we traveled with Cascia and Spoleto. Another day of being immersed with a rich understanding of the history thanks to our guide, Juliana, and driver Flavio. Disclaimer here… my wife and I are Catholic, and from that perspective we felt so close to the history of the church. The guides did a great job of understanding that and catering to it each day. Their recommendations on restaurants while traveling were top notch as well. I cannot say enough good things about the days we spent with Welcome Italy and will absolutely be using their services on our next trip to Italy!
