Die Architektur und Anordnung der aufeinanderfolgenden Hauptstädte zeugen von einem hohen sozialen Ordnungs- und Rangniveau innerhalb des Khmer-Reiches. Angkor ist daher ein bedeutender Ort, der kulturelle, religiöse und symbolische Werte verkörpert und darüber hinaus eine hohe architektonische, archäologische und künstlerische Bedeutung besitzt.
Angkor Thom, wörtlich: „Große Stadt“, enthält mehrere der sehenswerten Tempel und antiken Stätten, darunter den Bayon-Tempel, die Terrasse der Elefanten, die Terrasse des Leprakönigs, den Baphoun-Tempel und viele mehr. Es ist ein Muss auf einer Reise nach Siem Reap und seinen antiken Tempeln.
Das markanteste Merkmal des Bayon ist die Vielzahl heiterer und lächelnder Steingesichter des Buddha – wahrscheinlich nach dem Vorbild des Gesichts von König Jayavarman VII. – und auf allen Seiten die vielen Türme, die aus der oberen Terrasse herausragen und sich um die zentrale Spitze gruppieren.
Baphuon von Udayadityavarman II. (reg. 1050–66); und der buddhistische Tempel von Bayon, der der zentrale Tempel war, der von Jayavarman VII. erbaut wurde, als er der Stadt, die später als Angkor Thom oder „Große Stadt“ bekannt wurde, ihre mehr oder weniger endgültige Form gab.
Der Ta-Nei-Tempel ist ein sehr kleiner und selten besuchter Tempel. Der Mangel an anderen Besuchern ist einer von vielen Gründen, warum Sie diesen erstaunlichen Tempel besuchen sollten.
Ta Prohm wurde 1186 erbaut und war ursprünglich als Rajavihara (Kloster des Königs) bekannt. Es war ein buddhistischer Tempel, der der Mutter von Jayavarman VII. gewidmet war. Es handelt sich um einen der wenigen Tempel in der Region Angkor, bei dem eine Inschrift Auskunft über die Angehörigen und Bewohner des Tempels gibt.
Banteay Kdei, ein riesiges buddhistisches Kloster aus der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts, ist von vier konzentrischen Mauern umgeben. Jeder seiner vier Eingänge ist mit Garudas geschmückt, die eines der Lieblingsthemen von Jayavarman VII. hochhalten: die vier Gesichter von Avalokiteshvara.
Der Prasat Kravan-Tempel ist ein hinduistischer Tempel aus dem 10. Jahrhundert, der Vishnu gewidmet ist. Im Vergleich zu anderen Tempeln im Park ist es ein relativ kleiner Tempel.

Great tuktuk transportation through Angkor Wat. Sophal was very well prepared with towels and lots of water. He recommended a tour guide for $60 but I opted to do my own self paced tour with an audio guide and had an amazing time. Definitely need to book transportation between temples as it is quite a walk between them. Highly recommend this one as it was very accommodating, didn’t rush me and let me take it at my own pace which I really appreciated.
