Background to Ghent

Good introduction to the History of Ghent /Gent. Not a long trip but you get to see the key parts of Ghent/Gent town whilst enjoying a sit down. Tour guide fluent in lots of languages.

Lovely cruise through town with a very informative & funny guide (Peter?) Was a great way to learn things about Ghent without lots of walking

Informative but only if multilingual

I participated in a 40-minute city tour by the boat company on a Saturday. The boat was quite full, but there was enough room to sit. Due to the strong sun, parasols are provided. The tour is conducted in English, French, and Dutch, although the content is not identical, so it is helpful to speak more than one language to get a lot out of the tour. Otherwise, you unfortunately miss a lot of interesting information about the buildings on the water. The view of the city from the water is great, and you also travel away from the tourist area to explore the city.

Disappointing, but it could be me

Hot day in Ghent. This is a canal tour to see the amazing architecture from a unique perspective, the canals of Ghent. Problem was, the tour company gives anyone who wants a giant colorful umbrella for shade. These umbrellas are massive and with half of the people shading themselves, it is nearly impossible to see anything. Anyone behind the first row of the boat is blind to whatever is ahead. Those of us sitting in the center of the boat are likely to get blocked from seeing the sights by those sitting on the gunwales and holding umbrellas. I was hoping that once we left the dock, our captain-tour guide would ask passengers to lower their umbrellas. Nope. I would have also liked the captain-tour guide to request that guests not talk during the explanations in other languages so that those speaking that language could hear. That didn’t happen either, which meant that two thirds of the narration was in another language and the one-third in one’s native language is drowned out by people talking. It’s me, I know. But the fact that I couldn’t see most of the sights, nor hear the commentary, led me to think this tour was a waste of time and money. People walking in the sun might consider bringing hats. The canal boat company should instruct their captains-tour guides to mention guests be respectful of others on the boat. Finally, the canal boat company should get rid of the umbrellas. Sorry, but I wouldn’t recommend the tour without some of the above recommendations being put in place.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. On particularly hot summer days, we provide parasols to help protect our guests from the sun and make the tour as comfortable as possible. We understand, however, that they can sometimes obstruct the view for other passengers. Your comments highlight an important balance between providing shade and ensuring everyone can fully enjoy the sights. Providing umbrella's is a choice we make to ensure the safety on board for those who do not wear hats. We also appreciate and understand your remarks about the onboard commentary. While we cannot ask our guests to remain silent during the tour, we do encourage everyone to be respectful of those around them so that all passengers can enjoy both the views and the explanations. Thank you again for your honest feedback and your suggestions. They are valuable to us as we continue to improve our tours, and we hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back for a better experience in the future.

Great way to see the city...

Great way to see the city from the canal. Just be aware that the guide will likely need to interpret in multiple languages for the entirety of the tour, which means less information can be given on the sights passed. It is still worthwhile for the money!

Scorching hot with some beautiful views but average commentary

We did zero research and just choose the first boat tour operator we saw. The guy informed us that we would be leaving in “around 10 minutes” ..it was at least 20 minutes before we actually departed, and in the meantime we were waiting on the boat in the scorching heat. The umbrellas .. they are both a curse and a godsend. There is no shade, and they provided some respite from the sun at the expense of completely obscuring the view. The driver/commentator .. meh what can I say. He was OK. Very hard to hear him over the crappy PA system. It felt like we spent more time turning around than actually seeing the canal system. But to his credit there were some very nice views (in between the sea of pride umbrellas) and the odd amusing joke. Had we been moving constantly a breeze would have helped. But, the tour was 11 euros per person.. I can’t really complain.

Genth and its channels

Great way to visit genth, observe and know some corners, see the ancient and well-preserved architecture of this city in the existing canals. Not to lose

One of the best experiences of our whole trip

We accidentally showed up for our ride a day early. They were understanding and let us ride anyway. It was in the middle of the day, right during a 104° F heatwave, and they provided a shaded seating area, and shade umbrellas on the boat. The guide was knowledgeable and funny and easy to understand. One of the best and most interesting experiences of our whole trip.

Wonderful trip, informative and memorable.

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Alan (?) was brilliant, he adapted to the different nationalities on the boat well, the history taught was interesting and he made it entertaining and memorable. Such a beautiful area, and seeing the buildings of Ghent form another angle was wonderful. We would recommend:
