Our Zafiro Amazon Cruise experience was deeply disappointing and, more importantly, dangerous. One member of our group has a severe peanut allergy. Because this cruise takes place deep in the Amazon, over an hour away from medical care, we proactively addressed this months in advance. We had a Zoom call with Zafiro’s food management team and received written confirmation just days before departure that peanuts would not be served or handled onboard. Despite these assurances, peanut-related issues occurred repeatedly: Granola bars labeled with “may contain peanuts” were included in box lunches Tamales with peanuts were served at breakfast Pesto labeled “contains peanuts” was served at lunch The Cruise Director initially reassured us, then later admitted he had not been informed of the allergy, directly contradicting earlier statements. He did not take ownership of the situation, deflected responsibility, and ultimately avoided any further communication. As a result, the allergic guest chose not to eat for the final four meals due to fear of exposure. This was not an isolated mistake, it was a systemic breakdown in communication, training, and accountability. The stress and safety concerns overshadowed what should have been an extraordinary experience. Travelers with food allergies or medical needs should proceed with extreme caution. Based on our experience, Zafiro cannot reliably accommodate serious, life-threatening dietary restrictions.
We were very busy - no down time! Daniel was an amazing guide - very knowledgeable, impeccable English, very engaging. We did some unusual sightseeing.
This is a unique way to see the Amazon at its source near Iquitos, Peru. Cruise director Emily and a team of true experts on the flora and fauna of the region, naturists Robinson and Daniel, make the experience both educational and highly stimulating. On top of that, the Zafiro offers a culinary experience with elegant multi-course meals, enabling passengers to taste memorable food such as fresh Amazon fish and Peruvian desserts that are impossible to forget. All of the cruise staff we encountered are musicians, believe it or not. Joining the trip was easy by flying to Lima and meeting the tour group mid-morning at the Hilton Hotel in Iquitos. All transfers are arranged. We loved the whole experience!
