Know before you go
Short, straight answers to the questions every Moshi visitor asks before booking.
The sweet-spot months
The dry seasons — June to October and January to February — are the best times to climb Kilimanjaro, go on safari and enjoy clear mountain views.
For climbing Kilimanjaro
June–October and January–February offer the driest, clearest conditions and the best chance of summiting; avoid the heavy rains.
For safari
The dry months (June–October) concentrate wildlife around water and offer the best game viewing in the nearby parks.
Long rains (Mar–May)
Wettest months with muddy trails and lush scenery; quieter and cheaper but harder for climbing.
Short rains (Nov)
Brief afternoon showers, green landscapes and fewer crowds — waterfalls and springs are at their best.
Year-round base
Materuni, Chemka and Moshi town can be enjoyed all year, with the dry seasons best for the mountain and parks.
One day
Materuni Waterfalls, coffee and Chemka springs.
Two days
Add a Kilimanjaro day hike.
Three days
The sweet spot: waterfalls, a hike and a safari.
Five to nine days
A full Kilimanjaro summit trek by your chosen route.
A week+
Combine a climb or safari with the parks and Zanzibar.
Travelling with kids
Mix waterfalls, springs and a gentle day safari.
Tours & transfers
Treks, safaris and day trips include transport and pickup, the easiest and usual way to explore from Moshi.
On foot
Compact Moshi town, with its markets, cafés and clock tower, is easily explored on foot.
Taxis & dala-dalas
Taxis and shared dala-dala minibuses are cheap for getting around town and to nearby villages.
Boda-bodas
Motorbike taxis (boda-bodas) are a quick, cheap way for short hops, though take care.
Safari vehicles
Safaris use 4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs and a guide-driver, included in tour prices.
From the airport
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is about 45 minutes from Moshi by transfer or taxi.
Prepare for Kilimanjaro
Choose a 7+ day route for better acclimatisation, train beforehand, and book with a reputable operator with good guides and porters.
Tanzanian shilling
Tanzania uses the shilling; carry some cash for markets and tips, though US dollars are widely used for tours and parks.
Tip your crew
Tipping guides, porters and safari drivers is customary and an important part of their income — budget for it.
Health & altitude
Check vaccinations and malaria precautions, and on Kilimanjaro ascend slowly and watch for altitude sickness.
Support local
Choosing community-based Materuni, coffee and cultural tours directly benefits Chagga villages.
