Islamic Cairo & the Nile: A Historic City Day
Away from the pyramids, Cairo is a thousand years of minarets, hanging churches and a river that built a civilisation. This themed day moves from the Egyptian Museum's mummies through the alleys of medieval Islamic and Coptic Cairo to the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, ending with a Nile dinner cruise — with the top-rated tours to book for each.

Morning: the Egyptian Museum
Begin at the century-old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, still home to Tutankhamun's gold mask and thousands of antiquities crammed into its faded galleries. Entry is about EGP 550, with a separate Royal Mummies ticket. A guided visit is well worth it here — nothing is labelled clearly — and takes two to three hours before the afternoon crowds build.
Midday: Islamic and Coptic Cairo
Cross into medieval Cairo for the Citadel of Saladin and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, then the old Coptic quarter with the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue clustered along one lane. It is an easy area to combine on foot with a guide, who can explain the layers of faith that make up the city. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered for the mosques.
Afternoon and evening: the bazaar and a Nile cruise
Lose an hour bargaining in Khan el-Khalili, the 14th-century bazaar of copper lamps, spices and mint tea at El Fishawy café. As night falls, board a Nile dinner cruise for a buffet, a live band and Tanoura and belly-dance shows as the lit-up riverbank slides past. Two-hour cruises start around $35, and most include hotel pickup.
