Mens du slentrer langs brostensbelagte gader og vandrestier langs floden, vil du se nogle af verdens bedste arkitektur og møde gribende fortællinger om de konger, prinsbiskopper og lokalbefolkningen, der har gjort Durham til en af Englands mest fascinerende og historisk betydningsfulde byer. Vores historietur tager dig fra det travle hjerte af markedspladsen til slottets UNESCO-verdensarvssted.

Rejseplan
På vores mødested på det historiske markedsplads, i hjertet af byen, vil vi se rådhuset og Guildhall fra det 19. århundrede, St. Nicolas' kirke og statuerne, der mindes byens historie. Vi vil lære om de personer, der har været med til at forme by og amt. Herfra tager vi en kort gåtur til Framwellgate Bridge.
Den ældste af byens broer med en storslået udsigt over Durham Castle og katedralen. Her vil vi udforske historien om slottet og de berømte prinsbiskopper af Durham, før vi går langs den maleriske flodbredde til vores næste stop. Gåturen herfra til næste stop vil tage cirka 5 minutter.
Undervejs til Prebends Bridge vil vi udforske byens møller og flodbredder, før vi tager en spektakulær udsigt over katedralen fra Prebends Bridge.
På vej til South Bailey vil vi støde på den middelalderlige bymur og udforske den historiske rivalisering med skotterne, inden vi går ind i Bailey, som er hjemsted for Durham University.
St. Mary the Less, der nu er tilknyttet St. John's College, har nogle fascinerende forbindelser med Durham-legender. Vi udforsker deres historier her, mens vi tager den interessante arkitektur i Bailey ind.
Vi ankommer til den østlige side af katedralen og udforsker nogle tidlige middelalderhistorier og historier om St. Cuthbert samt lærer om nogle af universiteterne på Durham University. Gåturen langs The Bailey fører os til toppen af Saddler Street.
Vi går ind i hjertet af UNESCOs verdensarvssted på Palace Green og udforsker de forskellige bygninger omkring Palace Green, der er gennemsyret af historie. Her vil vi tale om de kampe, tragedier og mirakler, der er meget vigtige i Durham-historien. Klimaks tager os til dørene til Durham Cathedral.

Wonderful historical tour of beautiful Durham. Pete, our guide, was warm, friendly, extremely knowledgeable and explained lots of complex history in a very easy to understand way. Saw parts of Durham we would never have seen. Highly recommend.
This guided tour gave us a really interesting and entertaining introduction to the city of Durham. There was a good balance of history and quirky anecdotes! Peter has a warm, friendly manner, full of enthusiasm and knowledge . He also gave us a recommendation for a restaurant and a good pub -both of which we visited and were not disappointed!
Guide was very well informed and certainly knew his geography. We found him easy to talk to and he led our group through places we would not have seen. He gave us useful advice on where else we could go after the tour.
Peter was right on time and went ahead with the tour even though it was just me. He was very personable and that added to his sharing of the history and tales about Durham. He was quite knowledgeable about all aspects of Durham both historical and current and do I felt I really got to quickly know the key facets about the city and where I wanted to spend more time. I appreciated his leading the way around the city as Ud never been there before and again I certainly got more appreciation for Durham with his background than if I’d just wandered around on my own!!
