A magical evening
This was a fabulous evening. From learning about the garden, to cooking and then eating the delicious food. Being invited into a local home was both interesting and lovely. The fireflies were a highlight. So lovely to stand in the darkness and watch them glisten. Releasing them from the bottle allowed us to see them upclose and then disperse around us. All in all a magical evening!

Wonderful cookery class & firefly viewing!
A really wonderful evening spent learning how to cook 3 dishes (corn fritters, nasi goreg & chicken satay), with kindness & patience, in a lush & organic farm. Followed by a visit to a traditional Balinese home, and then firefly viewing in rice fields. Take your open heart & free spirit!

Cultural Delicious Informative

Free the Fireflies!
As advertised-cookery class including informative walk around garden.
Eye opening visit to local family, where we were welcomed into their private space.
Firefly experience (the main advertising focus) was disappointing! Mainly due to the status of firefly habitats (basically human are destroying these ). There weren’t many to see (images therefore misleading) and we weren’t happy that the few there were had been caught in plastic bottles with sealed caps, so we could see them! We would prefer to see the few there are, flying free. We did learn about their lifecycles and given how long it takes to reach their maturity (2 years before they glow) and how long they have to mate in this state (3 weeks). They should be left as they are and we should happy to see them free.

Regarding the fireflies, we completely understand your concern. Sadly, firefly habitats in Bali are decreasing due to development and environmental changes — this is exactly why we created this experience: to raise awareness and encourage protection of their habitat.
About the bottles, we would like to clarify that the fireflies are only gently caught for a very short time for educational purposes, and we always release them back into the same area. They are never kept or taken away.
Through this tour, we also support the local community in maintaining the environment so fireflies can still survive and reproduce, even in the middle of rapid development in Bali.

Loved it!!!!
We loved this experience! The hosts were delightful, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Fun to see & try to identify the different vegetables & fruits grown for Balinese cooking. Cooking class was well organised and easy to follow along, food was delicious. The tour of Balinese traditional home was insightful and gave us a much deeper understanding of Balinese culture. Seeing fireflies in nature was magical! Highly recommend, so pleased we did this as it enriched our Bali experience tenfold.

Educative and magical evening
This was a wonderful experience! It was just my friend and me, and everything felt so personal from start to finish. First, we were picked up for the one-hour drive — such a great convenience. We arrived at Pemulan Cooking School, tucked away like a hidden gem in the jungle, and were given a warm welcome.
We began with a tour of their organic farm. Our guide was young, funny, and very knowledgeable, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Afterward, we had what felt like a private cooking lesson. Since we had also booked the firefly night tour, the menu was slightly adjusted to fit our schedule — all fine with us. Because of the time, we didn’t make certain things completely from scratch, like the bumbu marinade or grilling the sate ourselves, but it was still a fantastic hands-on experience.
After dinner, we visited our guide’s own home, where he shared fascinating insights into Balinese culture. He explained how every room, courtyard, and placement within the compound carries symbolic meaning and reflects local traditions. It was a unique and personal glimpse into everyday Balinese life, and we felt honored that he welcomed us to experience it.
Finally, we went with the driver and our guide to a quiet spot among palm trees, banana trees, and rice fields to see the fireflies in the wild. It was a full moon that night, so the bright light made the fireflies gradually disappear, but it was still absolutely magical — the peaceful setting, the sound of frogs, and the feeling of being far away from everything.
I highly recommend this trip — it’s fun, delicious, educational, and magical. And, at least for us, it was also incredibly calming, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Ubud.

Cooking class with firefly degree
We didn't realize at first that it was mainly a cooking class - but unexpectedly comes often and it was wonderful! A guide took us through the organic farm with explanations about the plants and cooked an excellent Nasi Goreng and other appetizers with us, after which another guide gave us a little insight into the Balinese construction and lifestyle in his home. To top it all off, we could all watch fireflies together in the rice fields! Highly recommended! The guides are super nice ind friendly.

Cooking class

A real Balinese experience
Interesting way to see local life and learn about some Indonesian food. Visiting the rice field to see the fireflies was icing on the cake.
