There are tours you take, and then there are experiences that stay with you long after you've returned home. My visit to Gorée Island was the latter, and the people who made it possible deserve every bit of this five-star review. From the moment I was picked up, it was clear this was going to be different. My driver Solomon was punctual, professional, and warm, setting the tone for the entire day. Because I visited during the off-season, I had the rare privilege of a completely private tour, which made the experience even more intimate and personal. My tour guide Pape is exceptional. His knowledge of Gorée Island's history is deep and thorough, but what truly sets him apart is how he carries that knowledge with patience, compassion, and a profound respect for the weight of what he is sharing. Standing in the cells where enslaved women were held, hearing Pape speak about the dark history of the transatlantic slave trade, was one of the most moving and humbling experiences of my life. He never rushed. He gave space for the gravity of the moment to land. This is not just a sightseeing tour. It is a pilgrimage. And having the right guide makes all the difference. I will absolutely book again when I return to Senegal, and I would recommend this tour without hesitation to anyone traveling to Dakar. Do not skip Gorée Island and when you go, go with Pape and Solomon.

History about the slaves was very sad story. One of the best tour to know about Senegal. The guide was very helpful and informative.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am so glad I chose Visit Senegal and especially Pape as my guide. He made my time in Senegal incredibly memorable, and I left already wanting to come back. Everyone seems to know Pape. He is basically a local celebrity 😂. I only found out after booking that he has appeared in videos with Mark Wiens, National Geographic and others, which suddenly made a lot of sense. Throughout the trip, I felt like a VIP. Pape secured us a private area on the ferry, arranged an entire safari vehicle just for us at Bandia Reserve, organized our own boat to Ngor Island, and took care of countless little details that made everything feel seamless and special. He is also incredibly knowledgeable. Whether we were talking about Senegalese history, culture, politics, religion, food or everyday life, he always had so much insight to share. It never felt like I was simply being taken from one tourist attraction to another. I felt like I was genuinely learning about Senegal from someone who loves his country. Gorée Island was especially meaningful for me. Visiting the House of Slaves was a powerful and emotional experience, particularly because of my own family history with slavery and displacement. Pape gave me the space to take it all in while also helping me better understand the history and significance of the island. It is an experience that will stay with me. I also appreciated how much attention he paid to my comfort and safety. Everything felt personal rather than rushed or cookie cutter, and I always felt completely looked after. By the end of the trip, Pape felt more like a friend showing me his country than simply a tour guide. If you are visiting Senegal, I highly recommend booking with Visit Senegal and asking for Pape. Fantastic introduction to beautiful Dakar and many of Senegal’s incredible offerings. Our guide was very informative and kind. He accompanied us to Goree Island, several cathedrals and mosques and a many local markets- it was a full day and we were very comfortable throughout. Our lunch was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend!

This tour offered a fascinating introduction to both Gorée Island and Dakar, bringing together Senegal’s history, culture and contemporary identity. Gorée was undoubtedly a highlight. Beyond the beauty of its colourful colonial streets, Atlantic views and local art, visiting the House of Slaves provided a deeper understanding of the island’s connection to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. The contrast between the island’s beauty and its difficult past made the visit particularly meaningful. Back in Dakar, the tour provided a broader perspective on the capital through its markets, cathedral and city landmarks, culminating at the African Renaissance Monument. It was interesting to move from Gorée’s historical legacy to a symbol of Senegal and Africa looking towards the future. A rewarding day that allowed me to appreciate the beauty of Gorée while gaining a better understanding of Dakar and Senegal, from the complexities of the past to the aspirations of the future.

Pape Tata Ndiye made us feel like VIP adventurers from the beginning of the tour. From hotel pick up, crowd management at the ferry terminal, great seating on the ferry, and the tour of Goree itself was masterfully done. We felt as if we had the island to ourselves. His thorough explanation and discussions of the historic events was top tier. While parts of the tour were heavy, ie Door of No Return, we enjoyed everything that was offered. The trip to the Open Market, several other sites and the African Renaissance Monument was made very memorable. We had a small emergency that Pape was responsive to and assited in alleviating. We highly recommend Pape. Neville and Kim.
