You can use this short description for your guests: Writing East Africa Slave Market & Stone Town Slave Market The East African Slave Trade was one of the largest human trading networks in history, connecting East Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. During the 18th and 19th centuries, thousands of enslaved people were captured from mainland East Africa and transported through Zanzibar. The Stone Town Slave Market, established in the 1840s, became the largest slave market in East Africa. Enslaved men, women, and children were sold here before being sent to different destinations across the Indian Ocean. Following international pressure and anti-slavery efforts, the market was officially closed in 1873. Today, the former slave market site is home to the Anglican Cathedral and the Slave Chambers Memorial, serving as a powerful reminder of this tragic chapter in history and promoting education, remembrance, and human dignity. This description is ideal for a Stone Town walking tour or historical excursion briefing.
A fantastic tour! We learned so much with Maulid about the history of Stone Town and Zanzibar. We went to some key sites, as well as some off the tourist path which was great. I especially enjoyed being guided through the local markets and through the winding maze of streets in town. Highly recommend!
Zanzibar is really beautiful more than I thought, we took a lot of photos and experience awesome views. We enjoyed more warm services from my best friend friend Maulid with his team. We enjoyed feeding sea turtle. I appreciate them taking us to local markets which was out of our package. Stay blessed always.
Absolutely fantastic guide for a wonderful mornings walking tour of stone town - very knowledgeable, helpful, interesting and fun - you really couldn’t ask for any more - would highly recommend to anyone visiting stone town and keen to see the town and learn about its history, architecture and customs.
My name is Abreham, and I am the owner of One Love Ethiopia Tour based in Ethiopia. I was so impressed that I have already booked Mau for my clients who will be visiting from Ethiopia. I highly recommend Mau for a flawless experience.
Dear Abreham thank you for your positive recommendation and being so engaged during our historical walking in Stone Town I really appreciate it. One day I will pay a visit to Ethopia and wish you all the best with your Tour company as well.
Mau gave us a tour around stone town. He was charismatic and so knowledgeable. If you want to explore Zanzibar and understand the rich history. He is your guy! He also helped us get souvenirs at a good price, he has a mental map of all the areas and took us through all the shortcuts. I would 100% reccommend Maulid. Also, if you’re looking for photos, he’s not a bad photographer 😄
The city of Stone Town (old part of Zanzibar city) deserves to be lost in its narrow streets to enjoy and experience the constant hustle and bustle of the locals. Several mosques coexist with bars, selling fruit and vegetables... Visiting the slave market still makes you shudder just thinking about it, but it is a must-visit when in the city.
Wonderful tour of stone town with our guide Omar.He is really a captivating and passionate person. We had a great tour of stone town.It really got emotionnal when we visited the old slaves market.... We had the chance to meet the organist of the Anglican Cathedral who played for us on this amazing instrument. Thank you for these moving moments that we keep in our memories.
Maulid accompanied me during 4 days on tours and in Stonetown. He had prepared an itinerary for me which was great. He is very knowledgeable, loves what he is doing and carries you away with his enthusiasm. He is always on time, rather 5min early than 1 min late. He has a very pleasant personality and he and his driver make a great team. You plan a visit to Zanzibar and need a guide, Maulid is your guy. Hannelore, Switzerland
