The vast majority of the tour is lore about how haunted the building is. Like 80% of the tour. In fairness, the Tripadvisor title doesn't say 'haunted tour', but the official website does so some of this was my own error. I had taken the tour years ago when the majority of it was talking about the history of the buildings and Shanghai tunnels more broadly. When the tour guide was discussing the history of the building and the context of Shanghai'ing in the city it was really interesting. Less so (personally) when we were discussing orbs seen in previous tours photos and potential spirit trafficking practices in the basement. That being said, the tour guide is definitely an engaging story teller. If you are into the spooky / haunted tour thing, would 10/10 recommend. The beer at the end is very good and we definitely recommend staying for a slice (or two) of pizza after.
Doug is a great storyteller and solid guide. The basement tour was a bit eerie. Loved the lamps. Beer tasting was delicious. The pizza place had great pizza and staff was friendly.
Great experience! We watch a lot of ghost shows; I’m a believer, husband is a skeptic, daughter I think is a believer. Doug was our guide, and he was good, kept everyone interested and engaged; good mix of history and ghost stories. The Old Town Pizza venue itself is really cool…recommend staying afterwards for pizza!
If you want a ghost tour, maybe you’ll get to meet Nina. Skippy was cool. Very informative and the lanterns were a nice touch.
I thought this would be a tour of underground tunnels with beer tasting. It turned out to be a ghost tour, which may be fine for those inclined to believe in the supernatural but "lame" is the best word that describes it for me. There was some good information about tunnels and Portland history. At the very end the tour guide poured a small taste out of some cans in her knapsack. There were two beers and she forgot one of them until it was too late and time to go. She hurriedly poured the second one.
You don't go through any tunnels. Only travel in a small area. Ghost stories are not very credible. Everything is conjecture.
This was mildly entertaining but I was hoping for more history and less “ghost” tour.
Be aware that this tour has very little to do with history and is really spoken about way more as a ghost tour than anything else. Unfortunately, the tunnels underneath Old Town Pizza no longer extend as far as they used to. The underneath portion really only includes a few "rooms" and in fact the tour now begins with a visit to a building upstairs so you can hear a few ghost stories about someone found in an elevator shaft so you look at the elevator (which is beautiful but not at all related to the tunnels). Then there are a lot of stories about "during one tour, one person said they smelled perfume" and "during one tour, someone said they saw someone walk by but it turns out it wasn't a real person but it was a spirit". My experience is absolutely flavored by the fact that I was lucky enough to take a tour of the tunnels in the early 2000s that was led by a historian so I got a lot of the real history. Unfortunately these tour guides started their sentences with "it's my opinion", and "i would guess...". There's nothing wrong with that - they are absolutely not marketing themselves as historians and I think that's appropriate. I think I went into it thinking that I'd get as extensive and accurate tour as I got the first time and this was not it. If I had been expecting a ghost tour I'd probably have enjoyed it more for what it was but if you are expecting accurate history or to see much of the tunnels themselves, you will want to adjust your expectations.
Natasha was awesome! She was incredibly knowledgeable and shared the information in a fun way.
Excellent history and actual underground tour. Several other ghost tours in Portland do not actually take you into the tunnels. This one does.
