Very comprehensive 4-in-1 tour

The 4-in-1 tour at Tio Leo's coffee is very comprehensive. Coffee, chocolate, sugar cane, and a cooking class where we learned to make delicious Empanadas. Leo is very generous; he speaks passionately about his various plantations and introduces us to many products. Very beautiful experience!

Vegetarians don’t go

This is an average tour. He is knowledgeable but it’s the whole set up is very tourist oriented with no actual bean productions of the coffee or chocolate on site. Further the cooking class ruined our experience. Their idea of vegetarian is leaving the meat out in our empanadas, so basically giving us rice and beans cooked with beef without the chunks of beef. This was after we clarified at least 3 times this is vegetarian. And I would not have even known, but the pot they were giving us the food from had chunks of meat.

Operatørens svar

We are so sorry for your raiting due to a small mistake by our cook who for 15 years have put all her love into every thing she makes and who despite her mistake offering to change your empanada and its filling for ground beens that are proccesed with any utencils that are not used in other cooking that may contain meat, it is the first time that this happens and all ķthe comments support us and also we do work with real cocoa, we do have cocoa trees and coffee growing on the property, we were told by the rest of group on your family that because of a reservation you had for dinner were living early for that reason you didn't take the walk to the coffee, cocoa trees and sugarcane, you also missed the sugar cane mill interaction and the coffee roasting procces at the end of your tour. with all my respect and all my love i would like you to reconsider your raiting since every thing we do we do it with all our love and dedication. Thanks. Tio Leo

My family and I really...

My family and I really enjoyed the tour at first I thought it was not going to be good but we ended up enjoying it. We did hands on activities and learning at the same time. The tour also included tasting of chocolate, coffee and sugar cane and learned how to make tortillas!!!

A great family experience - for younger kids too

Excellent. Don’t hesitate to visit Tío Leo and sign up for the tour. It may be a long commitment, but well worth it. It’s an informative and fun way to spend an afternoon learning -in an hands-on way- about the overall Costa Rican coffee and agriculture industry albeit on a very small scale farm. We went as a family with a 6-year old and even he was kept entertained by the interactive tour activities. (There was also a table full of toys, which was a great distraction for the interim moments when he needed something to do - a great idea). As recommend by Tío Leo, do bring bug spray.

A must do trip for kids of all ages!!

This coffee tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip! The tour itself was fascinating, informative, and delivered with so much passion that it felt really special from start to finish. As parents of a toddler, we especially appreciated how wonderful the staff were with children. The planned activities kept our little one engaged throughout, and they even have small dedicated kids’ area with toys for children who need a bit of extra stimulation. Families with toddlers should absolutely consider visiting, from the taste tests to the hands on aspects, both our kids truly loved it! The food was excellent, the coffee was incredible, and every member of the team clearly loves what they do. Their enthusiasm was infectious and made the whole experience memorable. We left feeling like we’d experienced something truly authentic and special. Highly recommend!

Not to be missed!

What an exceptional experience! We were four siblings. We spent the entire morning with them preparing empanadas, discovering different coffee preparation methods, learning more about the history of coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane, tasting a multitude of local drinks and flavors, and then visiting the plantations. You quickly feel that Tio Leo loves to share his knowledge, his story, and his culture. Time flew by without us realizing it. Whether under the sun or in the rain, it is an enriching, friendly, and memorable activity that we recommend without hesitation to anyone visiting the region. Thank you to the entire team for your warm welcome and great generosity. You were one of the highlights of our stay in Costa Rica! 🌿☕🇨🇷

Warm and family-like experience.

For coffee and chocolate lovers, we highly recommend this experience. We were warmly welcomed by Tio Léo, who passionately shared all the charms of his family business with us. We discussed the history of coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane, and tasted each of them. We also participated in a culinary workshop for empanadas and visited the various plantations. Finally, we were able to purchase quality local products as souvenirs of our visit.

Incredible Experience - Will Be Returning!

Tio Leo's Coffee Tour has been one of our best experiences so far in Costa Rica! Tio Leo himself led the tour; he's such a passionate man and knowledgable tour guide. The other staff were also incredibly kind and did a fantastic job communicating with us despite our limited knowledge of the Spanish language. As tourists, we are very weary of tourist traps and want to avoid them at all costs. This experience is the furthest thing from that. Tio Leo not only taught us about the history of sugar cane, cocoa bean, and coffee bean production, but we got hands-on experience with the crop production process; we made empanadas ourselves, peeled cocoa beans, and ground them up to make cocoa nibs and powder. He detailed the coffee and cacao production from seedling to final product, giving us the opportunity to taste test and participate in that process ourselves. They also made us several delicious, in season drinks from the crops grown on the farm. On top of that, Tio Leo led us through his farm where he pointed out the medicinal benefits of different crops and crushed up leaves for us to smell. Throughout our time on the farm, nothing ever went to waste and "leftover" product was always reused for other purposes. This experience felt distinct and down-to-Earth without any cash grabs. Our time at the farm was well worth the price. There is something so special about this farm that's hard to put into words. We are lucky to have been taught a sliver of the traditional knowledge Tio Leo has cultivated through stewarding this land. There are only a few small farms like this left in the world, so it was an absolute privilege to witness Tio Leo's ingenuity and support his livelihood. Make sure to buy some coffee beans on your way out - the coffee here is wonderful!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Absolute Gem — Loved every part of it!

If you are looking for a truly unforgettable experience in Costa Rica that goes far beyond the typical tourist activity, stop searching right now — Tio Leo Coffee Tour is exactly what you need. My wife and I had the incredible fortune of being the only two guests on our visit, and what unfolded was a perfectly personal, deeply immersive, and utterly joyful adventure about coffee, chocolate, sugar cane as it relates to Costa Rica. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and genuine hospitality of Tio Leo and his wife and small team made us feel like family. There was no rushing, no crowds, no distractions — just the two of us being guided through this beautiful family-operated plantation with all the time in the world to ask questions, absorb every detail, and truly connect with the experience. It felt personal, homey, and completely one-of-a-kind. Tio Leo is an absolute wealth of knowledge and his enthusiasm for coffee, chocolate, and Costa Rican culture is completely infectious. He walked us through the fascinating history of coffee in Costa Rica, shared stories about the land and the plants, and made what could have been a dry, educational tour feel like an exciting journey of discovery. The coffee and chocolate experience was the heart of the tour but was so much more. Seeing trees with coffee beans and watching them roasted (the aroma alone is worth the trip!), and brewing a fresh cup of the most delicious coffee we have ever tasted. For the chocolate portion, we peeled cocoa pods, ground the cacao, and made our own hot chocolate from scratch. It was rich, authentic, and absolutely divine. There is something incredibly satisfying about tasting something you helped create with your own hands. Oh… and nothing is wasted as the cocoa grinds, sugar and milk were used to scrub your arms and hands. Amazing how that leaves them feeling… such a treat!! Beyond the coffee and chocolate, the tour took us through a lush garden filled with mango trees, banana plants, cacao trees, orange trees, star fruit, and so much more. We also pressed fresh sugar cane juice using a traditional ancient mill from the 1800s— one of those wonderfully hands-on moments that reminds you how much fun learning can be. Every corner of the plantation had something new and interesting to discover. Because it was just the two of us, the experience felt entirely tailored to us. Every question we had — and we had many — was answered with patience, depth, and genuine enthusiasm. There was laughter, stories, tastings, and a beautiful sense of connection to the land and the people who care for it. This is the kind of experience that reminds you why you travel in the first place. If you are visiting the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, do not — we repeat, do not — miss Café Tio Leo. And we drove over an hour from Playa Conchal and would do again in a heart beat. Whether you are a couple like us, a family, or a group of friends, this tour will be one of the standout highlights of your entire trip. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Tio Leo, thank you for sharing your passion, your knowledge, and your beautiful home with us. Pura Vida! ❤️
