Matera is beautiful, but you'd struggle to truly appreciate it without a guide like Vito. He grew up there and has great insight into how the city is perceived by residents of different generations and what it is like to live there -- not just visit and drop in. He took us to caves that no one else was in, was able to answer every question and even made some great recommendations for us for restaurants after our tour. Highly recommend!

Vito was an EXCELLENT guide! Very knowledgeable about Matera and gave a great overview of the city from both an historical and modern-day perspective. He is adept at explaining how and why people built the sassi and how they've changed over time. I particularly enjoyed his insights into the construction of the sassi as a form of "negative architecture". He didn't shy away from the challenges Matera faced before the forced government relocation but also dispelled stereotypes about the inhabitants. He shared a nuanced understanding of the politics surrounding the relocation and subsequent redevelopment of the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Vito.
Would strongly recommend our guide, Vito. Very knowledgeable and enriched our Matera experience. We did a two-hour private walking tour of the Sassi which Vito filled with historical context, explored many physical attributes, took us to several viewpoints, and even explained the various movies that have been shot in Matera.
We did the 3 hour tour with Vito and it was fantastic! He’s super nice and knowledgeable, we loved every minute of it. It was fascinating, a beautiful history lesson, we learned a lot, saw Matera from a number of vantage points, and now have memories (and a thousand photos) to last a lifetime. Look no further. Vito is an amazing guide. Born in Matera, Vito can trace his ancestors in Matera back to 1700. He is knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. We did his 3 hour Sassi tour.
