Det storslåede tempel har udsigt over Den Bengalske Bugt og var et vigtigt centrum under Pallavas regeringstid, da Mahabalipuram var den vigtigste havn i deres rige. Bygget af kong Raja Simha i det tidlige 8. århundrede, er Shore Temple et vartegn i Indiens arkitektoniske landskab.
Denne hule har 2 imponerende bas-relieffer på væggene. Den første er Lord Vishnu, der sover på toppen af en slanges spoler. Den anden er med gudinden Durga, der kæmper med dæmonen Mahishasura på en løve.
Bygget i år 640, er det Indiens ældste fyrtårn og et af de ældste i verden. Mahabalipuram var en meget travl havn siden det 7. århundrede, og derfor spillede dette fyrtårn en væsentlig rolle i at holde søfarende sikre.
Dette er en imponerende vogn skåret ud af en enkelt sten. Oprindeligt dedikeret til Lord Shiva, har den nu guddommen af hans søn Lord Ganesh. Det blev bygget i det 7. århundrede af kong Mahendravarman I. Det andet højdepunkt i dette tempel er de 18 inskriptioner i gamle grantha- og nagari-skrifter fra sanskrit.
Denne hule er et fint eksempel på Pallavas spektakulære arkitekturstil. Det klippede tempel er dedikeret til den hellige treenighed af hinduistiske guder - Brahma, Vishnu og Shiva. Der er også fine udskæringer af elefanter.
Næste stop er Krishna's Butterball, en granitsten, der står på en stenet skråning. Denne nysgerrige kampesten ser ud til at trodse Newtons tyngdelove og har ikke bevæget sig en tomme på trods af at den har været i denne usikre position på skråningen i mere end tusind år.

It's not really a day trip, more like a half day trip. It's an hours drive there from Chennai, you then get a two hour tour which is good apart from the awkward visit to a stone carving shop at the end where you are expected to buy over priced pieces. Then an hour back. We were offered a lunch which I guess could have been stretched out to an hour at a push. But really it's a two hour trip plus two hour tour. It seemed very over priced claiming to be 6 hours+. My advise would be to get your own transport there and a guide when you are there and it will probably work our a lot cheaper. We have done lots of tours all over the world including India this was definitely over sold and over priced.
