Samwel picked us up on time at 7.00h at our apartment. Even the trip to Materuni by off-road vehicle was an experience. On the short hike Samwel explained the plants along the way. The waterfall was impressive. At the coffee farm we were shown the steps of production from bean to ground coffee. We were able to roast and prepare our own coffee. Tasted very good, just like the subsequent lunch. Samuel was a competent guide, helpful and always in good spirits. Thank you for this lovely day.
Thank you so much Wolfgang and Iris for choosing our tour , was great to have you guys, You’re welcome again
If you are planning to spend time in Northern Tanzania you should absolutely add a stop in Materuni to your plans! Materuni is a beautiful village on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and this experience features an amazing hike and the best coffee I’ve had in my life. Samwel is the best guide around, and I highly recommend booking with him! He has a fantastic AirBnB in Arusha (Sana Africa House) with one of the best views of Mt Meru in town. I stayed with him for 4 weeks while working at a hospital just outside of town. He was a wonderful, caring host who helped me navigate the area and ensured that I had a rich cultural experience while solo traveling and working. Samwel was easy to contact, reliable, and very fun to spend time with. Materuni waterfall is well worth the hike, which winds through the village (with a few stops to enjoy avocados, passion fruit, bananas, and village-brewed banana beer) before connecting to a trail through the rainforest and hillside farms. When the sky is clear, the trail features a great viewpoint for Mt Kilimanjaro. After the hike, you get to join Justin, a local coffee farmer, at his farm to learn about coffee making and enjoy the amazing coffee as well as a great local lunch. As a bonus, Justin has a very friendly and adventurous dog who joined us on our trip out to the waterfall. I ended up going on this tour twice with Samwel and both days were among the highlights of my time in Tanzania!
Very great stay with very cool people. They are the best hosts we have had since traveling and we have stayed in maNy places. He invites you to mane activities but also gives you your own personal space if thats you. Also the home is VERY clean and well organized. I cant say enough good things about my stay here. Will definitely be back.
This was a really nice tour. I can recommend it for everyone, who enjoys nature and is interested in seeing how coffee is made traditionally!
Sam is an excellent tour guide, but he treats everyone like friends, so it truly is a special experience regardless of which one you choose! The materuni Waterfalls is a few hours from Arusha, but there is beautiful scenery and Sam fills the time with lots of local facts and history. The hike is beautiful! Be sure to wear good hiking shoes as it is a bit hilly, definitely not just a walk in the woods. The waterfall itself is beautiful and refreshing! If you hike in your swimsuit you can go for a dip!The coffee tour at the end was a real treat learning how coffee is incorporated into their culture. I would highly recommend this tour!
I contacted Samwel a day before my arrival and he was very enthusiastic about arranging Materuni waterfalls trip even for a solo traveller! He also helped with local SIM card and offered treats during the tour (locally grown fruits). You can also book his nice accommodation - just check his website, Arusha will become your home!
Sam organized an excellent day trip for us. The drive from Arusha was about 3 hours, but luckily Sam has a wealth of knowledge to share about this area and is an excellent tour guide overall. The walk to the falls took ~45 minutes and was well worth the effort for the views! On our way back , we got to try the local banana beer/wine too! And at the end of our tour, we learned about the process of making coffee "in the local way." We all participated and it was a lot of fun! The end result was a truly exceptional cup of coffee! Would highly recommend this tour for those with a full day of availability in Arusha!
Sam is not just an amazing tour guide but an amazing person. Loves what he does and is always smiling. I toured with him to a hot spring as well as Materuni water falls. Both were were amazing experiences. I recommend him to other friends and they all loved it.
It was an exciting day with many beautiful and unforgettable impressions. The road to the falls was already adventurous. However, the view of the waterfall could not top anything. A view and a soundscape that you won't forget. On the way back we had the opportunity to taste banana beer and fresh fruit. Afterwards it was shown how and where the Arabica coffee is made. We had the opportunity to make our own coffee, which we tasted afterwards. Finally, there was a balanced and freshly prepared lunch. Asante Sana!
