Af Sydindiens fem Shiva-templer, der er forbundet med de fem elementer, er dette 12 ha hektar jordens helligdom. Det antages, at de ikke oprindeligt tjente som tilbedelsessteder, men som arkitektoniske modeller.
Vi besøger også Arjuna's Penance, en 100 fod x 45 fod bas relief, hvor et helt mesterværk fra Mahabharata epic er blevet udskåret.

Stående som en storslået knytnæve af rock-cut elegance med udsigt over havet, omgivet af haver og ruinerede domstole, symboliserer det to-tårnede Shore Temple højderne af Pallava-arkitekturen og de maritime ambitioner i Pallava-kongerne. Dens lille størrelse belyser sin fremragende andel og den højeste kvalitet af udskæringerne, mange nu eroderet til vagt impressionistiske udsmykninger. Bygget under Narasimhavarman II i det 8. århundrede er det det tidligste signifikante fritstående sten tempel i Tamil Nadu.

Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram made for an excellent day trip and a fascinating introduction to the rich history and culture of Tamil Nadu. The temples and monuments were beautiful, with intricate carvings, impressive architecture, and centuries of history around every corner. The guides were outstanding and did a great job explaining the stories, symbolism, and historical significance of each site, bringing the temples to life in a way that would have been difficult to appreciate on our own. From the stunning shore temples of Mahabalipuram to the grand temple complexes of Kanchipuram, the entire experience was engaging, informative, and memorable. They were very resourceful and made the trip fun! I thought it would be good if I wanted to travel around with peace of mind, such as traveling alone for the first time for women in India. Maybe some buses if we can get away.
