My wife and I were very pleasantly surprised by our visit. We had been prepared for a dusty old collection of artifacts haphazardly curated. This castle/museum is first rate. It has a modern structure built for visitors to navigate, but the old castle structure is still intact and visible. The audio tour was very worthwhile. There were two standout delights. The virtual castle tour is a ‘4D’ movie about the castle’s history. If you’ve been to 4D experiences in Disneyworld, you know what to expect. If not, I won’t ruin it for you. Interesting movie for adults, but given the special effects, I think children would enjoy it too. Don’t miss the History of Puppetry museum. Sounds like a ridiculous subject for a museum, but it turns out that Slovenia has a deep history of puppetry and these displays are excellent. We took the funicular to the top and back although you can walk up. The funicular is a real contrast compared to, say, Budapest, which is pretty vintage. The Ljubljana one is very modern. We spent 2.5 hours at the castle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommend the audio tour.
The Time Machine tour was fun, the actors are engaging and help bring things to life. The funicular has great views if you are at the front. But note as others have that buying through viator means you get a voucher you have to exchange at the lower funicular booth to get your actual tickets. This isn’t a “skip the line” situation. I went on a holiday Saturday so it was mobbed and you’ll wait in the ticket line and then wait for your turn up the single funicular car to the clifftop castle. The tour was at 11, I arrived at the funicular at 10:30 and just made it to the castle bridge (where the tour starts) in time. Err on the side of going up early, you can explore the castle if you have time to kill before the tour. Or you can walk up (steep but not too bad, less than 10 min walk?) if really pressed for time.
It was great expirence. Our guide guy - Gregor was really good, nice and profesional like the all other actress! I recomended this tour to everyone, specialy groups!
Interesting experience. The guide told us about the history of the people of Slovenia and the history of the castle. In some places that recalled particular historical periods, actors were good at acting out short scenes in costumes of the time.
This is a top attraction in Ljubljana and definitely not to miss experience. You can go there by funicular, try to come earlier to avoid the big crowds. The castle itself is very interesting and offers the best views over the city. There are some small museums on the territory of the castle, we especially loved the puppet one, really good and will please the children and adults alike,
Very well maintained complex and beautiful view of the city. A total of two hours is sufficient for exploring.
Very historically interesting, professional actors and guide. Worth the time & money to be part of this incredible castle!
Was an awesome tour and the guide was fantastic. Please take the funicular up well worth the cost it is up there. Also, you may incur some cost, but it is a vacation.
I made the funicular to go up to the castle. I did a guided tour that I liked a lot. Then I went to visit several areas . I bought a ticket that allowed me to go to the tower. It is not very cheap, but going to the castle and not going to the tower to see the extraordinary views of the city, it is something you should not miss. in the space between walls, outdoors, there is garden area, restaurants and a bar. I had lunch at a very nice restaurant. I also watched a very interesting historical recreation. In short, it was a couple of hours well spent!
We did the time travelling tour and it was good fun, the guide really knew her stuff (didn’t catch her name - 11am tour 15th) and the actors were good story tellers!
