Ice Cave Tour fra Vík

Our second trip to the caves. We were here in the winter and it was crazy cold! September gave us windy and rainy. Family loved it! I was a bit terrified but did it anyway. Not for the faint of heart.

We had a wonderful experience with Katla Track! Inês is an extremely kind and communicative guide. She’s also very knowledgeable about the glacier and volcanic environments.

Amazing Glacier experience. Thomas our guide was very fun and witty. Don't be fooled by there clothing, bring extra pair of everything including socks. The glaciers are melting and invariably you will become wet and cold. It is an amazing thing to walk on a glacier and they taste nice too (tongue doesn't get stuck).

When we planned our Katla Ice Cave tour, we were reading reviews and checking the pictures. What we didn’t realized - that the scenery is changing extremely fast. They say just few days before our tour there were 3 caves, and at the time of our visit - just one. Also keep in mind that the weather is changing very fast in Iceland. At the beginning of our tour it was still raining and foggy, but as we arrived at the glacier we were rewarded with sunshine and no rain, so we got absolutely breathtaking scenery! Our tour guide Inis was fun and entertaining, helped with helmets and harnesses, told us lots of stories. Hike is not difficult, just pay attention where to step and always follow the lead of the guide. Because of rain we rented KatlaTrack raincoats, as our own were soaking wet. They also offer boots for rent if you don’t have hiking shoes. We took a tour at 2:30pm because it fitted well with our day, but it turned out to be the best weather possible! We’ve seen many other groups by other tour operators, cannot compare them:) KatlaTrack is well organized, easy to find, professional team. Highly recommend this tour and company!

This was a really fun and educational experience but is quite pricey. It's so worth it at the moment but when you see your credit card statement and reminisce, you'd wish it was a tad cheaper. I would say I had realistic expectations going in as someone visiting an ice cave in the summer. I knew we can't stay too long and that the nature of the destination means I won't have the same experience as everyone else before and after me. The off road ride to the glacier was bumpy but fun and we saw cool views. The tour guide also provided educational info and took great photos.

After a scenic ride to the site, the hike up to the caves is a thrill in itself. You'll cross over many powerful little streams on portable wooden bridges as you make the ascent and take in striking views at every turn. My son and I were able to visit more than one ice cave. We were unrushed at the locations and had time to properly enjoy all of it. Our guide, Stefán, really pushed the experience to the top by, for example, spontaneously taking measurements of stream depths using a pickaxe and rope, pointing out details about ice density, and letting my boy help shovel out some ice to re-route a melt stream. The group was rightly sized, only about ten of us, so you can easily move around (and easily ask questions as well). It felt almost like a private tour! It's a challenge to compare parts of an action-packed trip, but this event easily stood out.

It was an amazing experience. It is family friendly, even for our parents, who are 70+. It is a great alternative if you could not walk 3 hours on a glacier tour.

This was the highlight of our day. The natural ice cave was great. The walk on the glacier was a bonus.
