Colombo er den mest berømte i Sri Lanka. Det blev bygget for godt 120 år siden og er dedikeret til buddhismen. Templet er fejret for sin overdådige arkitektur og statuer, der viser srilankanske, kinesiske, thailandske, burmesiske og andre kunstneriske stilarter.
Dens arkitektur er indo-saracenisk, med granatæbleformede kupler. Men det mest ekstraordinære træk er, at hver mursten er malet rød eller hvid og brugt i kontrasterende designs.(Photo Stop)
Viharamahadevi Park eller formelt kendt som Victoria Park er den største, ældste og mest farverige park beliggende i hjertet af Colombo. Det er et perfekt sted at slappe af, til skyggefulde gåture, picnic og mest af alt et godt sted at tilbringe din tid med din familie.
Independence Square ligger i det prestigefyldte Cinnamon Gardens-distrikt i Colombo, Sri Lanka. Det har fået sit navn fra Independence Memorial Hall bygget der for at fejre Sri Lankas uafhængighed fra det britiske styre i 1948. Tæt på pladsen ligger Arcade, et moderne indkøbscenter i tidligere koloniale regeringsbygninger.
Pettah er et af de ældste distrikter i Colombo. Det er det mest etnisk blandede sted i landet. Store religiøse bygninger repræsenterer et væld af trosretninger, mens mere jordiske sysler kan findes i markedsboder og butikker. Folkemængderne i Pettah kan blive overvældende i myldretiden om morgenen og eftermiddagen.
Jernbanelinjen blev startet for over 150 år siden af briterne. Den gamle Fort-region i Colombo er et af de travleste områder i byen. I 1877 blev Kystbanen oprettet, og det var da den første station blev åbnet. På det tidspunkt lå den centrale endestation et sted nær Maradana. Placeringen kan stadig ses, da den nu fungerer som Sri Lankas jernbanemuseum.
Sankt Antonius Kirke er et monument over kærlighed og hengivenhed til Sankt Antonius, opvokset af alle, rig og fattig, i Colombo såvel som i hele Ceylon. Må Anthony beskytte denne by og denne ø og alle hans fromme mennesker og elskere deri.
Sri Ponnambala-waneswaram-templet er et af Sri Lankas fineste eksempler på dravidisk arkitektur. Dette tempel i Kotahena, nordøst for Pettah, er bygget af sydindisk granit. Det er dedikeret til den hinduistiske gud Shiva; mens den ikke er for gammel, er den stadig et uforlignelig eksempel på gammel Dravidansk arkitektur.
Den nye bygning til sekretariatet, rådssalen og regeringskontorerne vil stå færdig i Colombo senere på året. Den skal erstatte den nuværende bygning, som blev bygget under den britiske kolonitid.
Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall er et af de førende kongrescentre, der findes på øen. BMICH har over 16.000 kvadratmeter gulvplads. Opførelsen af dette kongrescenter var et fælles projekt mellem srilankanske og kinesiske arbejdere.
Srilankanere køber kunst for at pryde deres hjem, hoteller, kontorer og som gaver. Gadehåndværkere fra Nelum Pokuna har bidraget med deres kræfter til denne bestræbelse. For turister at tage med hjem, er et maleri, der viser et lokalt tema, det bedste minde.
Fyrtårnet er et af de få fyrtårne fra kolonitiden, der stadig er i drift til denne dato. D'et i fyrtårnet blev bestilt, så arbejderen i det område af Colombo kan være mere punktlig, da personlige ure ikke havde råd til alle dengang.
Tårnet blev bygget i begyndelsen af det 20. århundrede af en Parsi (fra Bombay) familie med navnet Khan. Det fire etager høje tårn står der den dag i dag på en anlagt rundkørsel. Vandfontænen, der er knyttet til den, er længe holdt op med at fungere, men klokketårnet fortsætter med at fungere.
Templet for Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil er et af de smukkeste og smukkeste seværdigheder i Sri Lanka. Der er mange smukke og elegante malerier af Gud og gudinde. It was booked last minute and was a good insight of Colombo. Managed to see quite a bit by driving around and also stopping off at places. Some of the places of worship have set visiting times so be mindful of that. Easy to contact via WhatsApp.
Driver was not very engaged and didn’t give us much commentary. We did see as much as we wanted to see but didn’t enjoy our driver
The tour was efficient in terms of time used. My guide was courteous, helpful and knowledgeable about the city and its history. It was time well spent, about two hours with little time wasted

We saw a lot of Colombo in a few hours in a late model mini bus with air con. Driver was very good and with good English. However at end it was a bit difficult to get to any markets for shopping so we just visited one Brand shop as a friend wanted Ceylon Tea. All in all great value. They met us at the ship. Dropped us off at Port gate on return and we took shuttle buses from there to the ship The hlghlight was the Buddhist temple and also Colombo was very very tidy and all be it a lot of old infrastructure littering was not evident. Most surprising and impressive. Sri Lanka is definitely worth a visit. Our trip was too short. Plenty more to see for sure. Read less ^ Explore Search Plan Review Account

We did it our own. It was a 6 nights and 7 days family tour of Sri Lanka. We were 5 (4 adults and 1 baby<2). Airport to airport taxi for the whole journey was amazing! The spacious taxi was full of comfort and convenience. It was dedicated to us 24x7 with an English speaking guide cum driver! We covered Colombo, Trincomalee, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Elia, Ella, Yala, Bentota with comfortable stay at different places managed by our own. The guide facilitated us with best of Indian food at various places of stay. The beaches, the mountains, the places of religious importance and the visit of Yala National Park were superb.

I guess I was expecting a tour with a guide who explained the history of Colombo. I had a driver who pointed out buildings, many which had the use on a sign. I visited an interesting temple but the driver didn’t compute to explain the significance so I am still unaware of its significance. Visiting a park was of little value when the explanation was this is where families come on the weekends. The three hour “tour” was completed in under two hours including the late arrival of the driver. I noted that other tourists had their guide explaining the places where we stopped. It was poor value for what I received.

Hi Viator, now we are back from our vacation in Sri Lanka, I can write about our Half Day City Tour experience in Colombo on 8/12/2023 in the afternoon. The “tour guide” is not a professional tour guide at all. He did come to pick us up at the hotel at 2:30pm, he basically ended up driving us around to a few tourist spots and that’s it. We each paid $30 (total of $60), which is a lot of money in Sri Lanka, but we got no tour in terms of explanation of the sites or culture or history at all. His English was terrible, when he dropped us off at a site, he left us alone and then he talked on his cell phone. At one point he drove us to a big souvenir shop as a tour site and I had to told him that we did not want to shop, we wanted city site-seeing and a tour. He did not deliver the tour at all, he just drove us to sites and that’s it. At one point, he even drove to a car repair shop and had a mechanic to look at one of his tires. He also talked on his cell phone while he was driving. The whole half day city tour was ridiculous. We have done many Viator programs in various cities and countries, this one does not live up to the Viator standards at all. We suggest that you stop using that tour company period!!!
Apple Vacations went the extra mile to ensure I saw everything I wanted to of Colombo. My guide was very friendly and knowledgeable of all the sights. Overall, a great tour worth the money - especially for those travelling solo (I felt comfortable the entire time). Would recommend to anyone, travelling solo or in a group!
