Whilst on a family holiday, I took the chance to visit this museum by myself. I am a big fan of DDR history and culture since studying at university and am interested in how the Germans remember their own history. With friends who lived in the DDR, I wanted to see how this came to life. It was busy on the Monday afternoon that I went which proved a bit of an issue getting to see exhibits at moments. The museum isn't a box room but it could do with being a little bit bigger than it is. The layout is not the most intuitive once you get past the section on the initial formation of the country. What is there however is good, interactive and gives a good overview of not just the basics but how the country worked, the structure of society as well as the unpleasant aspects of a dictatorship and the day to day life. The setup of a common family flat was particularly interesting. A lot of the exhibits and interactive elements have English and German options. I'd likely take my family next time so they can see it but I'd likely consider a morning rather than the afternoon.
Was a hot summer day. Then you hope for some air conditioning or cooling. But no, there were very small air conditioning units in the ceiling that you only noticed if you stood under them yourself. It was also very busy and everything was behind shutters. Because of the crowds and warmth we have seen little of the museum...

The doors, drawers and cupboards are a deliberate part of our interactive concept, encouraging visitors to discover the exhibition for themselves. For a quieter visit, we recommend coming in the evening. That’s why we’ve extended our opening hours and are open daily from 9 am to 9 pm. The wall came down on my 21st birthday, so growing up, Germany was divided. I never thought in my youth I would actually be able to visit Berlin because of this. This is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited! Gives an excellent view of life behind the iron curtain! Don’t yourself a favor: make time for this if you’re visiting Berlin!!
What a fab insight into life in Eastern Berlin during the Cold War. Exhibits were hands on and fascinating. History buffs will enjoy this tour. So worth a visit.

This was a disappointment. The museum has a LOT of exhibits and things you can handle but there’s no rhyme or reason to how it is laid out. Because of this it can get very crowded and warm quickly. I don’t recommend this museum.

The DDR Museum is intentionally organised thematically rather than chronologically, allowing visitors to explore different aspects of everyday life in the GDR at their own pace. The museum can become rather busy during the summer holidays and at other peak times, despite our efforts to regulate visitor numbers. For a quieter experience, we recommend visiting in the evening. That's why we've extended our opening hours and are open daily from 9 am to 9 pm. While the museum is temperature-controlled, it can still feel warm when many visitors are inside at the same time. We hope you were still able to take away some interesting insights into everyday life in the GDR.
A superb museum with a mix of information, thought provoking stories, artefacts, recreations and models. Great for adults and teens into/studying history. Value for money if you’re happy to take your time and get the most out of the experience. There’s plenty of history covered, and enough to fill 1-2 hours if you have it.

The museum provides a lot of information and I would have loved to really understand it, but all the explanations are only in German and English, and the children do not master either of these languages at a very high level. I read everything in English, but sometimes I didn't manage to understand. In general, museums offer other languages, such as Spanish or French. I imagine it is not easy to write everything in so many languages. An audio guide would have been very useful to me.

Unfortunately, the space available for exhibition texts is limited, which is why we provide them in German and English. However, several of our multimedia stations are available in six languages, including French. For visitors who would like more extensive information in French, we also offer both a printed exhibition guide and an e-book in French. Both are available from our museum shop and can be used before, during or after your visit to enhance the exhibition experience. We also appreciate your suggestion regarding an audio guide. Feedback like yours helps us to evaluate how we can further improve the visitor experience. We hope you were still able to take away some interesting insights into everyday life in the GDR.

A brilliant Museum, providing a good insight into the nature of everyday life in the DDR..Highly interactive and very attractive for young people. Some excellent artefacts and lots of data and information provided in an accessible way. The only downside is that the space is relatively small so it can get crowded. A very good retail offer in the shop

This was a waste of time. Costed EUR 13 per pers, which we could spend on something else. This was a very small museum, which was only 500 m2. Too many people and queues. Don't go here. Use your time to have a beer at a pub by the river
